Got a call from someone in LA, said I signed up for a Neumann promotion at Guitar Center July 13th. I did not. Said it was hard to read, had the address off by one digit, all info available about the studio on the web. Offered to ship a TLM102, cable and stand to the studio if we hang two Neumann posters and put 2 window stickers up. Then the kicker, all you have to do is pay $5 shipping. I need to get the name of that shipping company, great rate for a mic and stand. He said if I find out who signed us up, have them call this number to pay the shipping and they'd send the mic out, then be on-site in a month to see that the advertising went up. I'm tempted to give them a $10 gift card cc# to see what happens but my guess is nothing.

I mean seriously. you're giving away a 700 dollar microphone.. why be worried about $5 shipping, it's expensible just the same. Scammers need to think a bit harder.

I'm tempted to give them a $10 gift card cc# to see what happens but my guess is nothing. That's the whole point of the scam, isn't it? Make the amount low enough that you'll try it hoping it's legit. No one is sending you a free mic for a contest you didn't even enter.

I bet that GC would be really interested that some scammer is uising their name. I also bet that the cops would be a lot more responsive to a big corporation than to some random musician.
BTW, this is an excellent example of why you should never post your studio address on the web. Or make it obvious from the street that there is a studio there. I'd invest some money in good security equipment after that call.

When I read this I made a couple of phone calls to GC VIP’s ( contradiction ?) but nobody has called me back.

Have a gift card sitting on my dresser with $10.51 remaining on it, I actually went online to see if there was anything left on it just because of this. If anything, I feel like I'm $10 ahead in this scam so far!
I suppose I could hold onto it for this other exciting investment opportunity I'm in on, I don't want to tip my hand here, let's just say I may be liquidating gold bars for pennies on the dollar. Hush-hush, say no more, say no more.

I called the store they referenced, the guy I talked to was on vacation then but wasn't aware of any event. Really, it's not a bad cover story as pretty much anybody you talk to at Guitar Center wouldn't have knowledge of anything happening that wasn't on their twitter feed that day.

Subspace, just add a "Sergeant", to your name whenever you call back. Tell him you'll be glad to get the microphone, in order to practice your upcoming televised SWAT Team surveillance mission communications! Chris

Chris That reminds me of the time I was in QuikTrip and I got one of those “ this is the IRS and we need you to pay ... “ scam calls so I handed the phone to the guy standing next to me, did I mention he was an FBI agent😎

I laughed and suggested he try harder next time.

This exact thing happened to someone and they posted it on Reddit, right down to the area you're in and the GC part. They fell for it and it was a total scam. Scammers are getting smarter...

I was in a meeting the next day and missed a second call from that number, so I missed out on the escalation pitch. Kinda bummed, I could use a free toaster.

OK thinking about this a bit not how sure I am these guys are smart, the typical MI customer is not known for great credit, so chances are your not going to do much with the information of the typical GC customer.🤔

Dear Friends,
I took possesion of my free Neumann 102, a 2 meter Canare L-4E6S Microphone Cable as well as the Latch Lake MicKing 2200 shipped by currior just yesterday. All I needed to do was put up a couple of stickers and posters and that was it! I too was worried that it was a scam, who wouldn't, but the proof is in the pudding. Have no worries...unless that is you don't need another nice mic, fantastic cable and a world class mic stand!

Wow! Congrats! BTW I have fun "making fun" of the 103. But... I do respect that it's capable of making great recordings.
Unfortunately that model, along with the U87ai(!), are not "the best" kind of vocal mic on me.
The 102, however, I'd be very happy with... Chris
