I was looking around for a monitor controller that could match the specs of a decent interface (monitor out / phones out) and I was coming up blank. What are people using with their high end rigs?

The two I see most often are the crane song and the grace. Looking to upgrade here too.

A Crookwood custom solution here. It's a mastering console, monitor controller, 2 x DAC, 1 x ADC, VU, with level matched source and destination selector switches etc.

I've been wondering about the Heritage RAM 2000, but there aren't many of them in the wild yet. Also curious about the SPL 2381. I like its cue mix blend features, but the form factor seems a little yucky to me. The Dangerous Monitor ST still seems to get a lot of attention. And I know jeromemason really digs his Antelope Satori. I've been relying on my Metric Halo internal monitor controller for years now, and nothing is going to beat that in my system in terms of sonic quality when using its native D/A. But I would really like to add better analog cue monitoring to my way of working. I'm tired of monitoring my cue mix through the MH digital onboard mixer.

I'd been using the SPL2381 - sonically it stays out of the way, headphone amp sounds good, features and talkback are great. The only issue I had was that the noise floor to the mains is audibly raised. I ended up putting a couple pads on the main outs to compensate, quiet as a mouse after that.

Dangerous ST here. I’m so used to it anything else would feel strange. If I were to change, the Grace m905 would be nice to have- it has tons of features and a great remote. I think DrBill has one.

Is there any downside to the Dangerous ST? I've been considering it. When I relocate at some point in the near future, I'm going to have a mirrored monitor setup with the second monitor behind my 88-key midi controller. I'll either set that up at a right angle to my mixing desk or behind my chair facing the mixing desk. My thinking is that since the Dangerous ST remote only has the one cable coming out of it, it's easier to relocate around my work space than say something like the Drawmer MC3.1. I read through the Dangerous St manual a bit and saw that it takes a Cat5 cable for the remote. I don't know if there's a limitation on the length of that cable. That would be the only possible snag for me.

I bought mine used, and the included cable (I assume it is factory) looks to be 20ft or so, but I've never measured it. The ST manual says to use only their shielded cable, up to 100ft. Shielding may be the only requirement but the instruction is to contact them for info. See page six. You can get the latest manual here: Dangerous ST manual

I went to copy this link for you and ended up buying one myself before posting: $50 JBL M-Patch Active-1Not an endorsement and I use a console in the control room, but I thought of three things I could use it for before leaving the page so I ordered one...

I bought a used Dangerous ST. Mine had a blown chip, but I figured it out and fixed it for a couple bucks. I really like it. No complaints other than the knob is a bit slippery. I've thought of replacing the know with something that has some grip. Very well built and clean. Other than metering, I can't think of any reason to upgrade.

I looked at all the options a few months ago and ended up with the Grace m905. Really love it. Super transparent DA, and great all around feature set.

But I would really like to add better analog cue monitoring to my way of working. I'm tired of monitoring my cue mix through the MH digital onboard mixer. The Satori is more than a monitor controller..... It's a hybrid mixing DREAM. The features that box has, the sound of it and every single thing it does clearly were implemented from suggestions from guys like me, wanting the sound and features at arms length that consoles like an SSL6000E has. When I worked on that console you didn't have to move from the center section after you got your mix set up. Meaning, you went through each channel and worked the eq, compression, gates and sends, once you had that, you would have your submix VCA's, buss comp, monitor selects, aux listen's, submix listens etc. and it allowed you to work quick. The Satori is set up to work really similar. You're just doing all your mix set up ITB, sending those submixes to it's summing mixer (which you can listen to each stereo submix) and then out to your buss eq and finally your buss comp. It also has M/S and mono listen which I use the M/S a ton when I'm balancing the mix, it lets me instantly hear if I've got any phase problems and also let's me get an overall picture of how bright/warm, punchy the sides are, and flipping into mono lets me know if the mix is going to collapse, which then I flip back over to M/S and work out why it's doing that. Also having ability to make cue sends, summing mixer output level (lets you drive your buss eq's or not), assignable talkback.... tons of features and a GUI integrated as well. It's truly a great box and the sound of it is just pristine.

Check out Rob Squire in Adelaide Australia , he custom made mine Which he's since gone on to produce with mods such as VU meters on board. He's a bit of a legend over here and great to deal with. Not sure of the exact address as I'm doing this on my phone but his business is Proharmonic so Google will get it. Cheers, Ross

Been using the Crane Song Avocet for years. Thinking of getting a newer model (just because mine isn't surround compatible).
