What do the Symphony pres have that's different? I actually don't care that much abut the Apollo pres, I usually use an outboard preamp, and would probably add a few other pres. I use the Apollo pres for less critical things occasionally. It's comparing the sound of the A/D-D/A I'm most curious about, especially vs the Symphony. You can buy a module with 8 mic pres for the Symphony but I don’t know anyone who’s done that. Most people are just using the the line level I/O modules and external pres.

That's why i will have to try the Apollo Vs the Slate interface. The Slate pre's were design by Paul Wolf ( API) . i gues he know about preamp.dosn't mean the Slate pre's are better,it's just a good start !!!! If i can save $$$ on the pre's why not !!!!! Oh cool. Didn’t know that. They’re still Ic’s Right? don't know, i would like to know also. !!!

One nice thing about apogee pres is that they can be controlled within logic. I understand them to be very clean, so likely a nice combo with its converter.

I think the biggest issue with the Apollo pres is that they’re IC’s. Just the nature of the beast no matter what you do. Just gonna be smaller an less beefy. But as Joey mentioned in a text to me. Post Malone’s producer used Apollo pres and it spent weeks at the top of the charts. It’s not like you can’t make great recordings. www.uaudio.com/blog/louis-bell-nailing-tone-for-post-malone/Is it true that you use only an Apollo Twin as both your interface and preamp for vocals? Yeah, I keep it very simple. I start with the Sony C800 microphone, which is what I use for most vocalists I work with, unless they request their own mic. I connect that via XLR to the back of the Apollo Twin, and I’m just using the preamp that’s built into the Twin. I want to make sure that I can change the color of the vocal sound after the take, or tweak it if the singer requests something different from whatever we’ve printed on the vocal track in Pro Tools.

Cool article about how he uses an Apollo Twin and plug-ins, except why does the picture of him working have a big ass API board for his laptop to sit on Attachments:

You would be surprised on how many sessions I've seen where 2 channels of SSL K series were just being used.

I believe you, was just poking fun ;-)
I bet most of what I'd do if I had my own studio would require only one or two preamps. Only when doing band tracks would I need more preamps, and I'd probably get something like a Soundcraft board or a few API style outboard preamps. I could probably use one of these Apollos to track a band with, but I'd probably need more than 4 preamps.

Which is worth less than $300 on the used market. It is a surprisingly good sounding preamp for drums. 8 Channels. I'm sure the Audient ASP 8xx gear would do a stellar job as well. Then you've got your little lunchbox or 2 channel rig for the rest. That's how I do it here. The Apollo Unison preamps were also very good for drum kits.

I have a symphony MK1 with the 8micPre card. they are super clean sounding, tons of headroom, I use them more than my AML ez1073's or CAPI vp28s, to be honest, because it's just easier and sounds just as good.

Not sure if anyone has addressed this yet. Does the Apollo X8P share the 1-2 line out with the Monitor outs? I wish the x8p had aes/ebu.

John, no changes to HiZ inputs. It's all the conversion/clocking.

So, obsessive gear compulsion is leading me to sell this. I can vouch 100% for how good it is. In fact, I’m not completely sure it’s not just as good as the 2x more expensive Apollo. But - I’ve made my bed. Anyway, get it cheap here. $825 I can’t wait to hear more about your Apollo X experience, now that you’ve made your bed...lol

Yeah John, is the Unison tracking "better" with the new Apollo than the old one? Or can you tell?

Yeah John, is the Unison tracking "better" with the new Apollo than the old one? Or can you tell? Man...the honest answer is: I don't know. It has been so long since I've had the BF, I can't remember. I know I feel like it's better. I wouldn't hesitate to use the Helios or 1290 at all. I remember thinking the pres on the BF were really pretty "meh." When I initially plugged a guitar into the HiZ on this unit, I immediately thought it was better than what I remembered. I know I tried the UAD amp sims multiple times and never thought they were that great...but now I think they sound pretty damn good. As fo overall consensus - yes, I think the ADDA and clocking sounds better. Now - to me - it's like the old adage about an offensive line - they're doing great when you don't notice them. I don't feel like I'm missing anything with these converters. Are they better than the Motu? When I swapped back and forth, I thought so...but I wasn't blind testing, so it could be confirmation bias. And that should tell you how close they are.

I think all the analysis gets silly at one point, if your gut feels good about what you are getting done and you feel like you are spitting hairs trying to describe things: seems to me it probably sound very good, as in good enough, so just focus on getting stuff done!

I know John has compared the new Apollo's sound to the approach Dangerous Music has, which is kind of super clean. The Symphony to me was like a warm blanket on a cold night, just big and sweet, but it could also be described as soft.
If the new Apollo truly does hang with that level of gear, I'm interested for sure. For my needs, a one box solution would be best, but I've always been just a little dissatisfied with the Apollo's sound, even though it's certainly very good. After all, I did my upcoming album on it.

There's something to be said for the "if it sounds good, leave it alone" approach. But I don't discount the idea that inspiration can come from a variety of sources, and if someone is inspired by new gear, go get you some new gear.

We got evacuated because of the incoming hurricane, sucks. But both nights my only dreams was of the CAPI summing mixer. There was a voice in my head that said, "This is the best possible sound quality." So yeah I love new gear. My friend said, "you're weird."

It’s true. I break the monotony of this with new gear occasionally. Many of us do. If I wasn't planning on moving in some months, by now I'd have financed the new X16 and a Dangerous Music Monitor ST. I'm only holding back because I want to keep my credit score as high as I can until I buy the next house. Once that's done, I'll be shopping for gear again.

We are still going to try to have a house show on Sunday in Asheville. Could be pretty windy, lot of rain, maybe power outs. Maybe even extended power outs. The shitty part is my out of town friends are very likely cancelling their tour which is a major bummer. I'm having a bit of a hard time with adjusting my expectations right now, I've been looking forward to this week for months. And of course my hopes go out for the people on the coast and closer in that direction.
