I just can't with the whole Slate thing. It might be a good interface. Who knows? The hype machine is just such a turn off though that I just don't want anything to do with Slate's products ever again. I feel like I need a shower after watching one of his promo videos.

I won't even consider it unless it goes to 11 and doesn't include Dolby.

Not that dynamic range means ever/anything, but this is 124...the new Apollo is 129.

UA has for the most part been solid with their offerings. Not sure going after them would be a smart business move. Seems more like a di#@ measuring contest if he does.

I got kinda excited by this.
I really like the idea of it, at it’s price point.
See how it shakes out
UAD killer?
Cheers

UAD has always been Slate’s white whale.
If he made hip, stylish promo vids like UAD does instead of...this kind of thing, he’d be eating an even bigger chunk of their lunch.

I like the plug-ins.. not really in the market for a new interface or interested in “upgrading”. I never think its nice to put down a competitor product, always comes across as desperate to me.

I'm with you. The Slate FB forum strikes me as very cult-ish. Reality flies out the window and you're persona non grata if you don't swear his VMS emulations aren't as good as or better than the actual vintage mics they emulate.

So it's an 8 channel codec and an FPGA where the magic happens?
Fairlight did that back in the 2000's and nobody bought it then..
I also called the Raven as a bust and nobody listened..
But I think this one will be OK as long as it's somewhere in the 1499$ range..

The Slate fans can be nuts. He’s done well grabbing newbies with his affordable options. I criticized the VMS once and some guy got on his high horse and swore up and down that the FG47 sounded identical to his Telefunken U47. I felt like offering to buy him a 2nd VMS as a trade for his U47. I’m not trying to be contentious, but I should be allowed to offer a differing opinion.

I've been in the camp of "if you can't make music with this box, you can't make music" for some time. Just about any modern offering is good enough with the modern technology that's available. Let it be known that I'm not dissing Slate's new offering. I am, however a bit off-put by his blatant attempt to call into question a known (and used) interface such as UA. Brad Paisely cut guitar parts on a silverface Apollo on his tour bus that ended up on a few of his records. I'd imagine it's good enough to make music.

Honestly, a Focusrite Scarlett is “good enough” to cut stuff for a record.

Most interfaces are more than adequate nowadays and seen as you can tank a 14 core Xeon with a relatively small amount of vst's / vsti's with decent buiffer sizes I'm not convinced DSP is "worthless" quite yet in fact quite the opposite.. Especially as they keep "improving" plugs with heavier versions.

I think we'll see more of the native plugs on external hardware now that protocols like usb3, external pcie and TB are fast enough. Something like slate's plugs running on his box getting crazy good latencies while everyone else's plugs run in CPU and have higher latencies..
It's good for selling his brand of plugs. They buy his box, and now they're locked into his plugs. He sells the hardware at essentially cost but sells a ton more plugs whose codebase is already paid for long ago.
It's essentially the new wave of "hardware acceleration" if anyone remembers that from computer days.
If it works and sounds good..
But 2k?
Seems a bit stiff. That's likely MSRP, and street price will be lower..
Hopefully.
