More recently I've been recording my baby grand with pair of SDCs. I also put a LD mic over the sound board, which I usually blend in to taste. I use to use LD's exclusively, but I've come to like how quick and tight the SDCs are. Large Diaphrams alway seem to smear in comparison. Anyway, that's my layman's explanation of what I'm hearing.
My question(s): Since once ITB, I stay ITB, I'm considering a pair of compressors to use on the way in. Occasionally I'll bury it in the mix in a pop type setting, but most of the time I want it to hold its own with lots of detail, even it a dense mix - like in a jazz setting with pads floating underneath. What do you guys think? 76's 2A's VCAs? Or perhaps can someone explain why I should be using a stereo buss compressor?

There are so many ways to approach this, mostly dependent on playing style and eventual context. You can definitely overdo it and not know it until it's too late. The wrong compression can destroy some sparse slow tempo thing if you don't want to hear obvious pumping...etc....

3As and/or 1176 Rev F all the way!! And make sure it 'crunches' only on the Fortissimo and sFz.

I've hunted for a compressor for piano for 2+ decades. I could never find one that satisfied me and ticked all the boxes. Until I got a Manley VariMu. That box is genius on Piano. Killer. It's always on piano here.

......having said that, along drbill's line, I like a lot of different vari-mu types, SA-39, 26U, BA-6A, though I modified the time constants on all of them to do more than they do stock. When it works, it's great. Sometimes a fast rockabilly guy will call for an 1176 kinda thing, or an ELOP kinda thing. Sometimes a classical solo type thing will call for a VCA RMS kinda thing like the FCS P4DMS.

Aye, even the Nu-Mu whilst a little more tricky does the job.. I always use them on parallel / 2Buss compression for near enough anything with great result.!

I found fader riding a more satisfying way to compress piano. Otherwise had good experience with Vari-Mu compressors. Sometimes just driving input a little hard without gain reduction is a good way to make piano fit in the mix. Arrangement and mic placement is everything. If it sounds too clanky and honky for the song move microphones, change them or change engineer . If certain chords get out of control while others get buried change musician
