I need something to replace my MOTU 1248, had too many issues with it..
On the list so far is a Lynx Aurora 8(n) or an RME UFX II, the Mobo I had has a TB header but it requires an external card that from reviews is PITA to get going and works 50% of the time, everytime.. This is a Windows box..
So USB would be ideal, zero latency monitor is a must and if I could route it through outboard that'd be even more ideal..
Any suggestions?

I'm a big RME UFX+ fan, so the UFX II would be my suggestion. I love the redundant backup recording for remote gigs and the drivers are very solid. I've outfitted three studios with them, and use one personally.

We've got MOTU, RME, Apogee, UAD, PreSonus, and Mackie interfaces. The PreSonus and Mackie are backup devices/spillout boxes.
I can confirm the RME is solid. You will realise that your problems lie elsewhere in your chain.
At home I use a Topping D50 DAC. My next ADC will be MOTU.

RME is a great choice. I love my Fireface 802.

Cool, thanks everyone.. Quick question about the RME with outboard, when I record using a mixer I track with verb / delay OTB units via AUX's but only send the dry signal to the DAW (obviously zero latency). I've heard totalmix works like a mixing desk so can I do the same with it?
It sounds like a case of routing total mix to out X and in X via an aux, like I would with my mixer.. Just want to make sure.

Yes, the RME includes a "no latency" software mixer (TotalMix), which also has onboard effects which are very usable (you can add both reverb and delay). You can route any inputs to any outputs, so sending to external processors would be just as easy.
It's exactly the same as a digital mixer except there are no physical faders or knobs.

Cool, just so I'm 1000% clear here. For e.g. if I had my external pre plugged into channel 1, I could then route channel 1 to lets say channel 2 which goes through my Eventide then returns on channels 3-4 which could then be sent as a cue mix to headphones. Then when I hit record in the DAW only channel 1 would be recorded (obviously selecting channel 1 as the input).. (via totalmix)..
In short on a desk with AD/DA I'd send the digital out to the DAW whilst sending for e.g. aux 1 to the outboard reverb then I'd return the channels via the stereo in / aux inputs.. Then I'd route it to the cue / headphone mix (which of course wouldn't be recorded).. I pretty much want to do the same thing.
I did read you can control both the "software" aka DAW out's / in's and physical out's / in's via total mix so in theory it looks possible?

All that is possible. Just so it’s clear, every input is directly mapped to the daw, and at the same time it’s routed through the mixer. With the mixer, you can create any mix and send it to any output.
So, you’d be recording channel one, while sending it to output 1 for effects, which would come into the mixer via inputs 3-4. Those returns can be sent to the headphones, main, and/or recorded to the daw.
There are 12 outputs (including the stereo phone outs) which can all have their own mix.
Stuff can also patched digitally but I rather not do the extra ADDA.

There’s a series of TotalMix videos by RME which Inrecmmend watching. I think this is the first:

Nobody is better at providing rock solid Windows and Mac drivers than RME, Totalmix can take some time to wrap your head around and while RME may lack the sex apeal of some they are great sounding boxes.

I tended to shy away from RME in the past due to conflicting information on sound quality, although up until recently I've been rather "blase" about audio equipment due to work having cutting edge equipment / living in the land of well recommended or lofty setups..
I'll apologise in advance if anyone has a GSR but it must be the first time in a long time I've been dissapointed with something, the pre's had that ceramic cap sounding mid resonance with poor clarity / response and high self noise, the EQ was "grainy", the conversion couldn't be the claimed specifications because the electronics wouldn't allow for it.. Oh and a fader bank failed in the first week, so much for QC..
No matter, I'm sending it back.. Although it has been a bit of a wake up call, in contrast it made me realise how good the new MOTU interfaces sound. I hope the RME can keep up...

The GSR suffers from being designed with a feature set first, then to a price point. Every affordable VCA board has suffered from that same thing. RME has been part of the digital infrastructure of some of Europe’s concert halls and Shows like Blue Man group. Sonics not sure if it’s up to the new Motu stuff, but their PC drivers are far better.

Remind me to listen to you more Eric .. I love desks, they're easy if nothing else but it's not an area you can "cheap out on". It's going to be an interesting prospect trying to use two racks of outboard with an interface, might be some more "downsizing" happening in the future.
Anyone here gone from a console based setup to an interface centric workflow? Tips?

I have tried at least twice to move away from a console like many who came up on a console I just can’t do it! Summing systems are all somebody else’s idea of what they think I don’t need in a console! Audient is a great desk, new Trident felt cramped, like a giant Mackie. In a new board you owe it to yourself to take a very hard look at APB Dynasonics and the Calrec Live1, they maybe live boards but are probably the best sounding new boards out their.

Never had a problem with the SSL drivers. I thought I did once, but it ended up being my computer's ram.

Make sure to get a quote from your local Pro Audio Forum sales guy I would John but RME is on average around $250.00 more expensive in the US, then there's a 17.5% import tax.. You should set up an EU shop ..

Lol, well here's the thing.. We both know that if they actually have decent drivers and they're not bare face lieing about their specifications I'll hardly be able to tell the difference between the MOTU, RME or SSL..
THD+N on all of them is beyond the realms of perception, so it comes down to feature sets / routing / I/O / DSP / stability and latency.. I do use VSTI's a fair bit, so being able to track piano without too much delay is up there.
Hence why I keep considering an PCI-E interface, not because the innate latency will be much better if the drivers are done right it's under load processing that's the kicker.

Well the SSL madixtreme card is PCI-E. I've not used the Madixtreme card myself. I use the bigger brother, the MX4 DSP card that allows me to run plugs in DSP. As far as I know, the madixtreme card is the same but without the DSP sections. Supposedly the SSL cards use the full PCI-E bus bandwidth, not a few channels like the RME stuff supposedly does. Should be able to run 32 sample input latency easily for everything but cubase/nuendo.

Of course, the only issue is that neither the alphalink or the madixtreme are supported anymore. They do work under windows 10 I've heard. I still use 7pro for my recording machine and everything has been flawless for years.

I had a look at the Calrec and the Dyna, the issue with them is location.. I'd pay half of what the boards worth in shipping and taxes, SSL / Trident you can get at decent rates over here.
Audient is an option, something I'd have to save towards but it'll be a couple of years before I'd get one.

BIG RME FAN HERE TOO. In 17 years we once had to change some caps for the rest the thing runs and runs and runs. I will never lock back because of stable drivrs, always up to date and rock solid hardware.
I dont care if there are better options.
Cheers A.

I've been using Lynx interfaces for over a decade. I have an Aurora 16 (TB) currently. Great drivers and support. I'm very happy with it.
