I purposely don't have the bass jacked up in these because my whole purpose was seeing how well they sit down there and anchor a mix, not to hear them way up front in a way I'd never mix them. FYI

B for bass as for me it sits nicely without poking out and as well engaged me with it's movement coaxing my head to bop with the beat. Then C, then A which was buried far below my groove threshold.

I like A and C.. LOL
I think I like them all for slightly different reasons. A was very smooth and seemed to support everything without drawing attention to itself. B seemed to poke out a little much in some places, but would be cool in a denser mix. C was almost like a combination of the two but didn't poke out as much in some places.
I think any of them would work fine though.

I wish the bass was louder in this track aesthetically. I like "B" too. Track reminds me a little of Father John Misty "Ballad of the Dying Man". I think they both start on the same chord..

Great ear. They do start on the same chord and I intentionally tuned my guitar down a full step as Josh does most of the time. Has a unique vibe. I'm a huge FJM fan and am definitely aping various things from him on this next batch of material. Hes the songwriting voice I’m most interested in in current music.

FJM is awesome. There is not a weak song in his catalogue and I like every one of his tunes upon the 1st listen. What a fantastic artist.

The first time I heard "Ballad of a Dying Man" my initial reaction was "wow that piano recording sounds kind of beat" then his vocal dropped in and I saw the light. The vocal sounds SUPER forward, present, and great. Not in an annoying pop production manner but old school. They had notched that space out for him with the slightly subdued eq on the piano. If I heard that piano sound in a Forum shootout I would think it was weak, but in the song it makes total sense.

I know Josh tangentially and have corresponded with the dudes who produce/mix his records and I can say that absolutely everything about the production is deliberate and comes from Josh himself. If a piano sounds weird it’s because he wants a weird sounding piano.

Like a snare drum, the way a bass sounds solo'ed and the way it sounds in a mix is never the same.
Personally, I can't stand the sound of a P or J solo'ed, but in the mix . . . bang, there it is.

A all the way for me....Nice firm low end. Just supports the rest of the track. Loving all your tones Ragan. Everything you post sounds really excellent.

B, C, A.
Were these carefully level matched? I thought that A might have been slightly lower in the mix.

It does sound lower. They are RMS level matched but A has a little bit more elusive tone to my ear. Less fundamental, more overtone. Kinda hides a little. My preferences were the same order as yours.
