I saw this on the purple place. Apparently, the converterss were UA Apollo8 @ 44.1 kHz. It confirmed my belief that in terms of priority it is talent->mic->preamp->converter.
Personally, I liked the 47/Retro combination take the best, followed by the 251/Retro. However, I think any number of preamp/converter combinations would have yielded a workable result.

Yes! 1) talent 2) mic then 3) pre 4) converter

Hmm... I'd go: talent-> effects -> mic + pre-amp chain -> converter. Why? I like my snickers bar with nuts.. The C414 / M149 both had an annoying upper resonance that the pre-amp or retro-sta was doing nothing about.. The ELAM 251 sounded the best to me and without EQ the U47 sounds plain wrong.. Without some verb / delay + EQ to settle the score all the dry mic's sounded small / weak / un-natural and plain old boring.. The result is, she sounds like a mediocre singer because of it (like everyone does).. Technically sound, but devoid of anything euphoric or interesting. Now that video in the vocal holy grail sound of the singer with a pair of KM84's + an AEA R44 w/ sounds awesome, the verb gives a lot of power to the song even if technically I'd say the singer in this video is better. Just to be clear it's 1000% nothing to do with the singer, it's all about the recording in it's current state doing absolutely no favours..
TLDR; Effects for the win.!

^^^^^^^^
The reverbs were a UAD 140 EMT plate and Seventh Heaven reverb hall.

Yup, sorry I can clearly here the verb on it.. I just assumed because it sounds as flat as pancake compared to the example below. The verbs should be strengthening the vocals not the opposite way round, I've had the same issue with some ITB reverbs as well..
I take it you tried the Lexicon PCM suite?
Edit: Just want to say, I might be as blunt as a hammer but I always try to help.. If they are your recorded tracks A) Sorry if I sounded harsh and B) feel free to send the vocal track to me if you'd like, I can process them through my desk which has verbs and some mighty cool delays which really fatten stuff up..

shadowmd: It's not my video. Even if it was, I wouldn't be offended. Everybody has their opinions regarding sound. Arguing over it is a waste of time imo.
