This discussion is inspired by posting my current typical bass treatment in John’s “bass compression question” thread. I mentioned struggling with the 300-500hz range in nearly all my mixes. I think I tend to thin this area out to much with a thin mix as a result. Does anyone else struggle with this? Am I blaming the wrong freq range or is something else to blame? Maybe my old gigging ears? My room? Can we remove room and ears from the discussion? Or not?

It's pretty well known that folks cut this region fairly ruthlessly on bass.
I wouldn't sweat it.
If your mix is thin afterwards, then you don't have enough 100-200. This is the region where it gets lumpy and needs hard compression, which is why I separate the regions and compress them separately.

I shadowed two guys that were amazing live engineers. Both had very different styles. One guy would cut everything in this region, except for a few tracks. The other would leave it flat and boost this area on a few tracks. When the engineer who cut everything would see the board, he'd just start talking trash to everyone "what's wrong with this guy? Who the hell boosts 400?". Well it took me having some terrible nights to realize they were both doing the same thing: The first guy would use the channel EQ's to cut this area, but his 31 band was flat. The other would start with a deep smile at 300-500 on the 31 band and leave the channels flat, boosting whatever tracks needed some 400. To be honest, the second guy always sounded better, probably because his EQ's were free to use in other areas.

If so, it's wardpike@gmail.com I'd also like to see a screen shot(s) of your channels' EQs where you cut a lot in the mud range. After all, we're here to help each other... not like purple where you go to grandstand.
