What if there were a piece of gear out there, that basically used the power of todays DSP processing with analog front and back end inputs/outputs. While also incorporating a full console type center section for talkback, mono/MS monitoring, speaker management, selectable styles of either Neve/API/SSL/Modern* summing buss, Buss compression, Buss limiting. This feeding an A/D capable of soft clipping comparable to mastering grade Lavry type D/A's.
That's just the basic idea of each individual channel and the center section.
A post regarding a 500 rack that basically had a lot of analog, digital and a console'ish style "center section" with speaker management, talkback etc. made me think of an idea for something that could take the hybrid approach that most of us are moving to and incorporation DSP along with analog sections to both bring down cost and make a "no rules" concept. Instead of having to buy converters or an interface it would be incorporated. I've had a 500 Aphex rack before and being able to route to the 500 modules via USB while also having a "center section" allowing speaker management, HP's being able to use it as just a no modules interface was really great, still don't understand why they stopped making it. Now, I am going to go into how an RGO gear line, with startup members could get the hybrid box we've all been wanting, and eventually making a profit for each member.
My idea is complicated, it could be expensive if it was went about conventionally, but part of my idea could make it extremely affordable and a profit maker if people bought into it. If you think about the talent we have here at RGO building something like this could actually be incredibly simple, affordable and if all went exactly to plan, profitable for all those that bought into the idea from the start. If RGO members bought into this kind of Plugin-Alliance type of thing, I honestly believe gear could be dreamed up by these members, built and then offered out to the public for sale. If enough folks on here become RGO Gear members not only could the hybrid recording/mixing console be created but more and more gear after that, and the members, like stockholders would benefit by getting their dreamed up new product free, while also claiming rights to royalties of what is sold outside of RGO.
Most folks on here are in touch with what the majority of bedroom and amateurs are wanting out there, why not use the collective knowledge of this, build the gear, get one for yourselves and then sit back and collect royalties as those people buy the gear? By combining DSP with analog, like I said earlier it brings the cost down, create's no rules in what we can dream up and it makes the timeline from concept to sales floor much faster. These types of processors would contain mostly SMT components, the same folks that make the boards will bake those SMT components and the rest is some ribbon cables, final assembly and QC.
If you're going to say the DSP part of it would be what people wouldn't want, just take a look at the Weiss mastering comp..... It's all about imagination, design and DSP combined with analog where it makes a difference.
I don't have a lot of time to detail out this idea right now, but talk amongst yourselves, let's find ideas as to how RGO could make this work instead of a bunch of people saying how it couldn't work. This could be something that benefits us all, creates a legacy for RGO and John and gives us all gear we want and royalties on what we can get those out on those Facebook groups to buy, there are thousands of those people, members of the group would have incentive to promote and sell the gear and to research what these people are wanting to keep expanding and expanding while also expanding the members gear list and wallet.
Tell me why we can make this work, not why we can't. This thread is for those who want to do just that, come up with ideas as to why it could work, figure out details on how it could work and what roles people would need to fill in order to make sure things got done and no one got screwed. This isn't for anyone wanting to say why it wouldn't work. Again I repeat, this thread is not for anyone wanting to say why it wouldn't work, so just keep those thoughts to yourself and lurk the thread if you'd like, just don't throw any negativity into the thread.
Either this will excite some of you guys or the thread will die. Either way, anytime I have an idea come to me that could benefit me and others, especially regarding acquiring gear and money, I'm going to throw it out there. Hopefully all this makes sense, it's late, but I had to type out what was in my head right now or I could lose it by tomorrow after I mix a couple of songs lol.
One more thing I think might need to be required..... All those wanting to become a member should be known to most on this board and an active honest RGO member. If you don't meet this requirement or are a new member, a qualified member can suggest/vouch for you, or you can provide a link to your social media activity, website and album credits.
