I'm thinking of adding a dynamic EQ to my plugin arsenal. The main use would be to tame a few offensive cymbal hits here and there in the overheads. The Sonnox looks good and even though it's pricey, it's 50% off right now. I'm going to demo it and probably get it. Any other recommendations? Either for dynamic EQ plugins or "offensive cymbal hit" cures

I did try the free version of TDR Nova and it never did what I wanted it to do. I was never able to set an absolute threshold so audio would only be affected when I wanted it to. I'm sure it was operator error, but I gave up on it.

TDR Nova is good and so is Waves F6. I have both but use F6 more due to the lower CPU hit. I find dynamic EQ to be a great problem solver for taming harsh sounds without scooping the life out of the source.

Brainworx DynEQI use it on every track. It can do MS, external sidechain... It's limited to one band per instance so I can use 4 or 5 instances on one track Voxengo GlissEQUse it for more subtle cut/boost. It does wonders everywhere

Thanks for all the suggestions. I demoed the Sonnox and it took me seconds to dial it in. It felt like cheating! Sounds really transparent. I’m going to go for it.

I go back and forth between Nova GE and Sonnox.

You can just do it the old way and EQ the sidechain of a compressor in the spots you want fixed.

Better yet is hardware designed to do this. BSS makes an excellent 4 band stereo "Dynamic Equaliser". It uses parametric filters with dbx VCA's for level control. Pump or duck any frequency at any time by any amount.

Have you demoed Radix Surfer EQ? That thing does things no other EQ can do. Hit me up if you need help with it.

Thumbs up for Surfer EQ here, as well. It works wonders for me on electric bass.

Usually I simply automate a volume reduction or an EQ, but the Sonnox is exactly the “magic” fix I was looking for, dead simple to use and really powerful too. I’m usIng it in MS mode, knocking just a dB in a couple different frequencies, with the detector in “onset” mode.

I guess I’ll have to demo SurferEQ sometime. Also Soothe, I’ve seen it highly recommended for vocals especially.
