The Royer shockmount thread got me wondering about decent shockmounts for heavy Coles 4038 mics. I've tried using the Rycotes but they just droop too much. I wish they made some beefier lyres or a specific shockmount for this mic. The sling thing sold by Coles looks pretty awful.
Has anyone found a decent solution for shockmounting these heavy mics?

The Rycote USM is pretty decent with the Coles.

Thanks Adam. I've tried them and for pure horizontal work, I think they're too droopy. Over time, the lyres sag to the point where the basket is touching the outer frame (negating any shock isolation). See my pic attached. Attachments:

I can’t count the number of shock mounts I have seen that needed new bands.

Maybe try to find an Enhanced Audio M600 used. he seems to have drooped off the planet, but his mounts were spectacular

With a shockmount always call the manufacturer first, unless Adam or JK knows the SKU for the bands. I’ll admit this I had to deal with guys I worked with thinking any generic band would work with any mount, hell I got into a shouting match with a coworker because he suggested a customer should just use elastic hair bands, never thinking these things were actually carrying a fairy expensive load! I have even had more than one manufacturer send new bands plus extras at no charge.

You are 100% correct however I have never been in a studio that didn’t have at least some of the elastic bands replaced with generic ones meant for hair. Studio managers/owners are odd ducks - they’ll pony up thousands of dollars on mics but refuse to pay the $18 Neumann charges for each Replacement elastic (we once couldn’t use a multi-thousand dollar piece of gear b/c the studio wouldn’t pay $100 to have it’s battery replaced!) Yeah you forgot the until one of those hair bands breaks and their expensive mic is on the floor and they are crying! Only made worse and hastened by the fact the mic lives in the shockmount.
