I can get it to work, but invariably I find it very frustrating and it seems to do the opposite of what I want; bypassing something I am trying to turn on etc..?
Any pointers or good online tutorials ?

you're probably stuck in Read mode when you want to be in Touch mode, or the other way around. Read the chapter in the manual on it, it's a pretty simple system.
