Do you ever use a “wurst” or knee mic? I just tried it today with an SM57 and I am mightily impressed! I have ordered an EV 635A for that but it won’t arrive in time for my next session.
The 57 is awesome anyway. I managed to place it in between the two rack toms, equal distance to the kick and snare. It sounds huge!

414 in omni is pretty cool sitting just above the kick drum shell next to the rack tom and ride if you have a 1 up 1 down drummer. Throw some filters and judicious mashing on there and its a cool sound to be able to blend in.

I like it a lot sometimes. I sometimes run a dynamic through a really colored pre like a Shure M67 or Altec 1567 and blend it in.

Yeah I like the EV 635 or the newer CO4 in that position. Actually there are a few variations on the exact position of course.

Why is it called a "wurst" mic anyway? It points at your junk? There's this German engineer Moses Schneider he called it that. It's on YouTube somewhere... He adds heavy gating, distortion, and stuff, to really mess it up. Makes it sound sort of synthetic.

I've tried most every trick there is. I never got along with most of them, and this is one of those I didn't really care for. Seems like low room mics in the corners do everything I need besides the spot mics and overheads.

I've been experimenting with a Placid Audio RU-80 that I picked up recently. It takes care of a bit of the distortion and eq on the way in, though I do recommend copious amounts of compression.

I used to put one on the drummers right ass cheek....... As long as he did eat mexican for lunch all was good...
In all seriousness it did give a pretty nice mic to run through a devil loc and I always used a 57 for that.
Also as mentioned above, if your drum room is large enough, the Blue Drangonfly's, you can put them just enough off the floor so they're not touching, and move them all the way to the corners of the room pointing right at the kick. That will give you a pretty massive kick sound once you line them up, polarity wise I mean, or just use AutoAlign and take a tap off the kick out to align to.

Well my EV 635A arrived today just in time for the session ... only to be beaten by the SM57! The EV sounds ok for the “wurst” position, but the SM57 sounds stellar! I think I just lucked out with the placement, equidistant from the rack toms and kick, and from the snare and floor toms.
In that position, the cardioid pattern of the 57 seems to be an advantage, since it doesn’t pick the resonance of the tom shells. The sound is really punchy, whereas the EV is kinda muddy.
I’ll find another use for the EV!
