I’ve used it in the past. Fine pre. I think I might have even liked it a little more than the 73jr.

I borrowed one from a friend and found it to be pretty amazing. It brought clarity/dimensionality to both vocals and acoustic guitar. I'm mostly wondering if there's a cheaper option that is on par- like the great river, avedis, etc...
It's funny when people talk about Neve 'color,' because I thought this pre made everything more clear.

Thanks for the input. It's true, there is another one. And there will be another after that. And although you may cry out in frustration and shake your head in disbelief, one fact will not change: there is ANOTHER ONE. But perhaps this other one, will actually be THE ONE. Which brings us back to your singular monotheistic gasp. It seems you live in the conundrum of a cat who is also somehow a dog, or rather a k9 stuck in a feline form. Therein lies your problem. Solve that conflict and then come back with something useful. Meowoof!

I live pure of heart, centred, balanced in this space. If you perceive a cunundrom : look into your heart for its resolution, be the root of your final measure!

Conundrums aside, my little Stam SA73 sounds and feels like a Neve. I tried the Great River and liked it a lot. I like the Stam even more, My gut memory of using a real Neve console kicked right in because the Stam felt enough like the Neve did to trigger my sense memory.

You might have noticed we have a number of current threads about other 73 clones and within them have also referenced s number of other 73 clones, including the aml. So, I really meant my first comment humerously and didn’t actually negate your question. Perhaps, you should consider that rather than your patronizing remarks?

I have used the 1073lb and have the 1073dpa. I find they sound almost identical. I still think the best thing is to try them all out and see what fits the sound you're after. I've used most of the Neve clones out there and chose the AMS. And I have to admit, I really didn't think the AMS would turn out to be my favorite. When I did my tests quite a few years ago, everybody on the purple site was bashing AMS and praising BAE or AML so I was surprised to find that on my music, the AMS dpa was the clear winner. Now I would've been happy with any other one honestly, they're all nice preamps and I still use the BAEs regularly as the studio I often work in has a rack of vintage Neves, BAES and Scheps but for my money, AMS all the way. The BAE sounded a little bloated to me, I always had to use a lot of HPF, the AML sounded brighter, cleaner and the AMS was somewhere in between and just sounded right for my work. I had to use a lot less eq. I also tried the Heritage out even though it was a few years later and I only had the DPA to compare but I still picked the DPA. The Heritage had a push in the upper mids that I did not need, it kind of reminded me of the CAPI VP28 in that sense. Now just to be clear, I record mostly folky/americana acoustic stuff, if I were working on hard rock or something I could see that upper mid push being useful on electric guitars, snare...
The downside of the DPA is it isn't point to point which makes it harder to service, and from what I've read a lot of people have had issues with theirs ( I have not ).
Now obviously in the last 5 years there are a ton of new clones out there so maybe something better is out now, but I'm not really interested, I'm happy with what I have.

I demoed an AMS 1073 and a BAE 1073D .... personally I found the AMS too polite and ended up buying the BAE which felt much closer to the sound of an original 1073 to my ears.
