Got word that this is finally released and it's interesting. It's supposed to be a combo of Autotune 8 and Autotune 5 with some new features and improved dsp on the vibrato. That's what Antares support told me, although the product description says they update the algorithm with each version. Support also told me that Autotune processes the audio differently each time. So far in my experience with it, it doesn't look like I'm getting the same results as they are. I tried to get some other feedback before posting here, but it doesn't look like anyone else has been able to try both at the same time. You can't have them both installed as far as I know. It hasn't worked for me. Once you install Pro it replaces all instances of 8 but retains your settings, you don't have to uninstall 8 first. If you try to install 8 again, it makes you uninstall Pro. Thus far I find that Pro sounds more natural, more in tune, clearer, and treats the highs better. This is with a retune speed of 20-30, Flextune set 40-60, target ignoring vibrato, 15-20 on humanize, default on everything else. Keys set to whatever keyfinder said it was. I haven't tested the new Autotune keyfinder tool yet. I've done several bounces of a couple different tracks, one after another with both AT 8 and Pro. The tracks had no hardware or plugins applied during recording and nothing after. I deactivated everything but Autotune.
Every bounce I did of a track nulled with other bounces using the same version, dead silence. I'm not sure how Autotune could be processing something differently each time if the bounces all null. I only got a bounce of an 8 and Pro to null once. It looks like they are the same at certain settings maybe. Other times it sounded like I was listening to the effected area only in a de-esser plugin with some weird flanging after. My null test was done in Audacity by importing the files and inverting the phase on one. Then I imported them into Pro Tools and used trim to invert the phase on one file. Same result. I've asked Antares if they have any idea why I'm getting these results or if they know how to adjust settings so I get the same result in both 8 and Pro. So far, they don't have an answer. The tech support guy is not a dsp engineer, so he has to relay things to the dsp guy. DSP hasn't deviated from what I wrote above. They also told me that a null test wasn't the best way to measure performance. Null tests aren't something I know much about other than a lot of people say it confirms audio is identical. I'm just trying to figure out if there's much of a point for me to upgrade given that I don't use graph mode. Flextune is good enough for me. I'm definitely curious about everyone's experiences with Autotune.
