I've been acquiring some wonderful pieces of gear in the last couple years and wanted to give a shoutout to some of the companies that make such stellar products. I stay pretty busy in my home studio producing limited pressing records, doing demos, recording vocals, and cutting bass tracks. Here are a few key pieces in the chain.
Teegarden Audio Magic Pre Teegarden Audio Fatboy Tube DI (If you don't know, Bret Teegarden is a veteran Nashville engineer and he makes some fantastic gear!) Chandler Limited RS124 Compressor Amphion one15 monitors Miktek CV4 microphone Shure SM7B Radial MC3 Monitor Controller Triad Orbit T2 mic stand (I'm not impressed with things like mic stands very often but this thing is super cool!) Nice-Racks (www.nice-racks.com) - I started with a simple 2-space rack and then last year got a 14-space slant rack. David Tatelbaum does incredible work! These racks are built really well, they look fantastic, and they don't break the bank!
I'm interested in hearing about what key pieces are in your studio (large or small).
Peace and low notes, Clay

What amp are you using with your amphions ? Currently, I’m using a Samson Servo 360. It’s serving me pretty well right now, but I ultimately want to get the Amphion 500 power amp.

Mine is a home project studio. I don't have a ton of outboard gear but what I have works well for me. My rack: UA Apollo Firewire w/ TB card and Octo satellite Hendy DaVinci Sebatron Axis Demeter VTMP-2c Hardy M1 Audio-Scape Opto (second one coming as soon as it's ready to ship) Audio-Scape 76a
I have a bunch of mics but my best are: Flea 47 Gefell M295 (pair) Blue Kiwi Blue Woodpecker Earthworks SR30 AKG C414 XLII
I'm a happy camper.

Cool, Jim! I'm using an Apogee Duet interface but bypassing the mic pre's altogether, instead always using the Teegarden Magic Pre. Whether it's for vocals, bass, or a cello overdub, whatever it's used for sounds killer. Here is a little video of my good friend Matt McClure using a plethora of Magic Pre's on drums at Oceanway Studio in Nashville.

I really want to try the Teegarden stuff. I will shoot a message to the US distro on that...He isn't too active on showing me stuff. So I gotta hit him up Really enjoy the Amphion setups. I recently got a one15 pair with an Amp100 and i LOVE them. I am using a Merging Hapi with an ADA8 card, mostly at 192K. It sounds glorious! Just using mics into the box lately, which include the AEA 44CE, Gefell M-300 and a Innertube Audio U4700 tube mic. Haven't had much time to record anything lately, as I just started my new job. They have way more gear than me, and that's the way I like it

I really like the amp100 with the amphion cables. The whole system is well designed to work with the speakers themselves. It is very clean and fast. I suppose that kind of clinical precision isn't what some people want.

I’ve tried the Emotiva, Amp100 and Parasound A21. The Emotiva wasn’t bad at all, the Amp100 was the most clinical. I kept the A21.

Lauten Atlants stereo pair...Wish I had more LDC stereo pairs. The Lauten Atlantis is no slouch. I bought one to use with my Flea 47 in a mid-side configuration and I've been using it to lay down scratch vocals. If I didn't have the Flea, I could be pretty damn happy with what the Atlantis brings to the table.

If I didn't have the Flea, I could be pretty damn happy with what the Atlantis brings to the table. I heard another engineer's recording of it on acoustic guitar which sounded great. I wanted a stereo pair LDC's for overheads and acoustic guitar recording. SoundPure had done a mic shootout where the Atlantis was used for overheads and they sent me the file which I was impressed by. So I bought a pair and have been happy with the purchase. I wish I could afford a Flea though. Congrats! Some day perhaps.

Key Pieces ...... JCF AD-8s (My favorite tracking AD by far) Dutch and Dutch 8C Monitors Teegarden Magic pre 4100 (kinda beats most pre's) I would describe these units as a slightly tube like version of the MArtech Mss 10.. 30 DB discreet gain block with a 20db input tranny. Giant and detailed without being antiseptic like a millennia... Capi BT 50s and LC 25s.... Silver Bullet. Sage electronics Diode Bridge comp. Hendy Amps Michelangelo stereo EQ Hendyamps Pollock Prototype opto comp Hendyamps Rembrant 4 channel preamp Custom Hendyamps channel strip Antelope Pure 2 for buss processing (Mastering) and Monitoring.. Asterope Wire.. Mics... 2 Bova Ball Electret mics Ronan Applied sciences one off condenser... Gefell UM70 Stager Ribbons Crowley and Tripp Studio Vocalist Milab Kick Mic A ton of other odd ball mics and staples...
My tracking rig is still in progress after being primarily a mastering engineer for the last 10 years...

I tried the Amphion 500 first. I found it very bass heavy and always had trouble with mix translation. Might work in your room but it didn't in mine.

I thought about having it modded but I honestly am afraid it will change what I'm hearing now. My latest mixes are the best I've ever done. Don't like to mess with a good thing too much, you know?

My latest mixes are the best I've ever done. Don't like to mess with a good thing too much, you know? I went through the modding phase for years trying to search for what I thought I wanted. I ended up so far away from where I should have been, I took time off and unmodded almost everything and started fresh. Now I'm finally catching up and realizing that the mods did nothing but keep me from honing my skills. I'd say that most people don't need mods, they need time to hone their skills. Mods don't necessarily allow you to skip ahead in progress, they just lead you astray if you're not careful. Sometimes the road less traveled is that way for a reason.

The best stuff in my studio?
That's a tough one. I've pared down everything to what I use regularly, so i'd say that it's all cool for what I use the gear for.
Things I couldn't do without are:
CAPI pres SSL bus compressor 1176's Svartbox converter Reaper
and everything else I love, but I could probably use something else in it's place if I absolutely HAD to.
