Thanks to illacov for the heads up...had no idea these existed. Interesting. 2 and 4 channels www.steinberg.net/en/products/audio_interfaces/ur_rt_series/ur_rt2.htmlThe UR-RT2 is a premium four input, two output USB 2.0 audio and MIDI interface with switchable Rupert Neve Designs transformers on the front inputs. Combined with the onboard, high-quality D-PRE preamps, the Rupert Neve Designs transformers deliver a musical, more expressive sound with rich harmonics, which is especially beneficial for vocals, acoustic guitar and other instruments with a versatile dynamic range. Offering a studio-quality, mobile production platform with a range of input/output options for laptop and iPad, the onboard SSP2 DSP chip also delivers zero-latency FX for monitoring. The robust UR-RT2 is engineered to offer outstanding quality for its price class, making it the ideal portable production interface for PC, Mac or iOS.

Going from memory, the preamps are the same Yamaha uses on a lot of their products. I don't think they're necessarily bad. I have the UR824 and never liked the sound of a guitar or pedal steel going through it. Only with a REDDI on the front end is it anywhere near acceptable for me. The headphone amps aren't that good. My X has a UR22, and its acceptable for her to monitor through with good speakers. It's great to use it for audio on a computer for everyday general playback. However, with good Mics, it's acceptable for added tracks; which is what you mentioned @johnkenn. I would only ever use it for such... Granted, the products you mentioned are newer than what I've used. If they improved the other components & circuitry and retained the preamps (as it appears), it may be pretty good for the price. SIDE NOTE: I complained a lot to Steinberg about the nasty sound I got from guitars through the UR series. They "upgraded" the firmware to add guitar sim plugins (evidently to mask the thin sound). I didn't upgrade, because that also limited the use (removed ability of the driver) to use other versions of the Windows OS... I also experimented mixing down from a Soundcraft console into the UR824.. I wont be doing that again! :-) All in all, it's OK for extra vox or voice-overs.

Problem is, there are equally priced competitors with better specs. I do like the idea of the transformers and the dsp though.
