Having exhausted all my rack space, I've had a genius idea! I can buy a Radial Workhorse Sixpack and BUY MORE GEAR!!! I'll hook it up to the patchbay via DB25 and I can get it out of the way when it's not needed. So, can you guys chime in about your favorite 500 series modules? Preamps, EQ, comp, weird stuff... I'm mostly interested in processing kick and snare or overheads or possibly the stereo buss. Stuff I have my eye on: API 560 eq, A-Designs EM-PEQ (Pultec), Pete's Place Electrodyne 511. In pairs. And, of course, LTL Chroma and Chop Shop!

I like my pair of Avedis e27s on just about anything and I have a pair of IGS 576 blue strips that are great on electric and acoustic guitar. Also a fan of the Serpent Audio SB4001 and would love to try the Splice SA76.

Get an 8 space at least.
Chroma, chopshop, analog allstars pultec, CA-250.
Nope go 10 or eleven space... It so easy to fill up quickly.

Chroma, Serpent Splice's & SB4001, Chop Shop's, API 550A, CAPI LC25 (I'd suggest these over the 560's - easier to adjust & easily recallable)

RND 542 tape sim - great on everything, tracking and mixing AML ez 1073 - don't know how they compare to other neve clones but they're amazing when you run the drum bus through them (as well as general tracking)

I love my Neve 542 tape sims. Really dig the dbx 560’s for something on the cheap that works reallly well. For a color eq I’ve had the Electrodynes on my list for a long time. The Roll tube stuff is way underrated as well. The tube opto comp is really good. Wouldn’t mind a pair of the pultec 500’s either! So much good stuff out there! Get a bigger rack!

Chop shop, Hairball FET500, DIYRE EQP5.
My list of modules to get:
-Serpent audio SB4001 -Serpent audio Chimera -JLM LA500 -Really want to find 2 Moog analog Delays -CAPI BT50 -More FET500s, different revisions -DIYRE OLA5(ordered just not shipping yet) -CAPI ML2(a lot of these for my mixer setup)
And Id get a 10 space PSU at least. Maximize the rack space.

Another vote for the IC Brute!
Have to say, I’m a fan of fewer knobs, especially in 500 series gear.

I haven't tried them all but what has stood out to me so far.
Vp28 Lola Ma-5
They are special.
The chop shop is a fantastic tool and jlm la500a never sounds bad.

BAE 1073Ds with the 16k band. I use these on Coles.
My favorite thing overall though is the DI in the Electrodyne 501, which is also an all around great preamp, and reamp path.
Think I would go all CAPI though if I had to start over. So many awesome modules now.

They're not cheap tho I wonder how much of that is his opamp. Would be worth a shot doing CAPI eq avedis opamp. save a few hundred per module. I really want to hear CAPI's eq's and compressor. I have a feeling they would have been on my list.

I probably shouldn't even contribute since I've only ever used a handful of 500 series modules but I landed on a pair of the Great River Harrison 32C and they're indispensable to me. You can push the frequencies around like crazy and it just sounds right. They're creamier than SSL 611's or API 550b's but not overly colored. They just kind of impart a smooth, console-ish sound. Like what plugin console emulations pretend to do.

I'd enjoy a studio full of Great River actually.

Oh I should add, if you want the 32C's to be cleaner, there's an internal jumper that changes from feedback to non-feedback mode. It's really subtle but it is there. I leave mine on 'vintage' (feedback mode).

Some more CAPI love here as well, the VP28’s get used every sessions. Soundsculptor MP573 are a great 1073 style option also.
