Hi guys, a friend is looking to add 8 pres primarily for drums, guide vox, bass etc to his BF Apollo 8 Duo; any recommendations of similar quality that won't break the bank.
Presonus D8
Audient 800/880
B********** AD 8200
?
All suggestions and rationale if you have the time, gratefully accepted
Cheers, Ross

haven't ventured into this domain personally ,even though my interface is capable, but it seems like the one I read the most often about is the AD8200.Anyone else chime in?

I’ve been looking at the ISA 428 myself, but they also have an 8 channel version. I have the octopre, but I’m not a fan of those preamps. Looking to sell it at some point.

The Audient ASP 800 is really, really good. I own one, it compliments my vp28's/vp26's well. I use it for drums alot. The DI's sound really good on bass. and the tone/drive controls on the first two "retro channels" do exactly what you want them to. I can't recommend it enough. Plus, its looks way better in your rack then B gear. It's a high quality piece.

I’m using the Presonus DP88 with an Apollo 8. It had the most connection options out of the other contenders in the same price bracket (Audient, Focusrite, ..). The XMAX preamps sound comparable to the Apollo’s to my ears, but what sold me is that you can bypass the preamps entirely if you’re using external pres, which is not possible with the Focusrite Clarett and lower end Audient.
The kicker is that the latency is ~20 samples behind the Apollo, vs ~2 samples for the Clarett. This will only be an issue if you’re tracking drums across both interfaces at once, otherwise non-phase sensitive elements won’t give you any trouble if you’re recording more than 8 channels at once. The general consensus the last time this came up is that the sound of the Audient and Clarett pres were marginally preferred.
You can find the DP88 pretty cheap on the Bay (I scored mine for under $450 new, which made it an easy decision in the end)

Vincent is that the latest Clarett Octo Pre you are talking about ? - Turramurra music in Sydney gave it a good rap as they also did for the Audient

With the 428 or 828 you'd need their A/D conversion card to run it in via ADAT.
I've got a 428 with the card and use it with a couple of BLA preamps for the other 4 inputs.
Works for me.

Anyone compared the Audient, Presonus, etc to an RME Octamic II? It’s getting a bit old, so I wonder if the more recent gear has surpassed it.... used ones can be found pretty cheap.

I have the Audient ASP 880 hanging off one of my BF Apollo 8"s
Great sound, flawless sync with project sample rate (I normally use 48k)
I am using Apollo clock as master.
Very impressed with the variable HPF and the impedance options, plenty of good clean gain.
Next week I will be hooking up the dsub insert points on my patchbay and that will take the potential to the next level.

Yes, Behringer ADA8200 with Midas mic pres and Cirrus Logic A/D - D/A. Great price. Perfect companion for ADAT input with my Apollo.
