Love this Geoff Tanner quote: "Oddly enough, back in the old days, we really didn't consider there was much difference between the transformers. Who would guess that 40 years later we would be discussing this in audiophile terms and whether paint is green or blue."

Sorry I didn't read the thread. I don't give a bleepity bleep what "some people" say I think the modern Carnhill transformers sound AWESOME and I'm not afraid to buy them and use them on anything.

Only posted for reading pleasure:no agenda:) Gotcha. I didn't think you had an agenda... but some of the people on the "other site" certainly rub me against the grain, which is why I didn't really want to get into that read.

Only posted for reading pleasure:no agenda:) Sure. NOW there's no agenda... ...but if you open a transformer painting service in the future I'm hunting you down (so I can invest in the business - audio people will fall for ANYTHING...myself included).

? Not certain where you are going with this ? As I am just trying to understand why the different 73 clones sound the way they do ?
Even in the soundpure clip the 4 different 73's actually all sounded different, the trannie must be part of that difference. I was just doing internet research on their history and found the thread so posted it.

Who would guess that 40 years later we would be discussing this in audiophile terms and whether paint is green or blue." Some people cant get over it that they already own great gear. I said it last year too ... its like with some of my guitar students. They buy every week some gear ...guitars, pedals etc. But they never practice guitar...they sit down and ask me waht do you think about "Distortion pedal XYZ". Well I dont know becasue all I need since 28 years is TS10 / VOX Wah and some Fuzz. Next crazy topic is rolling as well - guitar pick ups are now hyped more than ever before. I see questions rolling over me which I cant answer because I dont waste my time with reading about pick ups. And the internet is not making it better, people get too much useless information. One student asked me if his Strat would sound better if he puts it over night in the freezer. I said, in the best case its broken after this.... he didn`t catch my sarcasm.

"Strat would sound better if he puts it over night in the freezer"
gee that is so funny !
We will all buy pres/ gear that we like and hopefully, then, we stop talking about it and just use it.
I moved to my largely OB system over the last while and it got to the point, where I felt all I was doing was system set and config ( you guys warned me and you were right ! ), never recording or mixing: fuck that!
So, I put everything back together: worked on mixing my last song and started writing a new one and got back to working on a song, not my system.

Part of what this shows is even the gold standard of the Neve 1073 was built to a price! Just like the old API’s an off the shelf transformer was the secret sauce! But yeah they are delicious!

That’s what Rupert said, the 73 sound is very much the transformers.

I'm not sure where I heard it, but I think I recall him saying that he believed the transformers must have fallen out of spec over the years? My MCI deck's transformers look like nasty rusted warped pile of garbage, but sound good. Makes me wonder: if the transformer wire's coating decays in spots, what does that do versus a newly built unit?

In my experience it makes a HUGE difference
Particularly in the low end.
Recreating the original Marinair LO1166 is not an easy task, it doesn't matter if it was a off the shelf transformer or not, it sounded a certain way and had a huge low end.
Jensen did a good job getting closer to it. Sowter is also almost done with the new LO1166 which looks very promising.
