As a guitarist, I'm asked to play at funerals from time to time. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the back country close to where I live. As I was not to familiar with the backwoods around here yet, I got lost.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.
I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I opened my case and started to play.
The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played my heart and soul out for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man.
And as I played ‘Amazing Grace,’ the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my guitar and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”
Apparently, I was still lost…

My aunt has been playing the organ at funerals for the past 50+ years.
A couple of months ago she played a cremation and was told by the family they wouldn't require any organ playing at the last point as a record was going to played to send the person off..
I kid you not but the family member put on the Lp on the wrong track, button pressed and the person was sent off to 'another one bites the dust'..
brutal..

Just to show I have a totally sick sense of humor I want Burnin for you & Don’t Fear the Reaper at my Cremation! Besides Don or his estate will be a couple of cents richer!

We already dedicate the song in concert in tribute to people who have passed away. And that was a great story, Herbie.

That was brilliant, brightened my day. I'm having Sinatra's 'Cheek to Cheek' at my funeral.

A friend of a friend had "under the sea" from the little mermaid. Like a 100 people sang along.
