I have a 1974 MCI JH-16 2" tape machie sitting in my studio. I literally have NEVER used it and It needs to be in someone's hands who will appreciate it fully. This is the holy grail machine. 16 channels on 2" for max headroom, with input transformers on every channel. It also has the full punch remote. The heads were relapped and never put back on the machine. Nortronics with approx 60% headlife. I have an upopened MRL for the machine, brand new 25 ft. Toushel snakes with XLR fanouts for ins and outs. The machine is in great condition but has something wrong with the erase function. I haven't used it in 10 years. It is located in Kansas City Missouri. Asking $1200 or a great vocal mic for trade. Buyer would have to pick it up of course. Email me if you want pics or more info. jonathonashleymiller @ gmail

At least it won't be quite as big a PITA as recapping my 24 track Studer.

MCIs are also something of maintenance hogs - they have a lot of Molex connectors in them that like to work loose periodically. (I have a JC-110 mixdown machine). If one particular connector works loose the thing goes into uncontrollable FF (IIRC) and ends up spewing tape all over if not caught immediately.
That being said, if I lived closer I'd consider picking it up. They're not that hard to work on, unlike some other machines, you just have to stay on top of it. And be careful about alignment since the top plates aren't quite a heavy as they might be. Oh, and it also helps to replace all the notorious red IC sockets - the contacts loose tension over time and cause annoying intermittents.

johneppstein Good to know. I'm a producer and not a maintenance guy so she needs someone who can care for her properly.

johneppstein Good to know. I'm a producer and not a maintenance guy so she needs someone who can care for her properly. <chuckle>.... Well, if you own a multitrack tape machine and you don't have a maintenance guy you'll find yourself becoming one sooner than later.... and you'll definitely need to learn to set up the electronics daily and do things like checking head alignment on an MCI. I am something of a maintence guy and can handle most routine stuff like recapping and chip swapping but still occasionally have to call in a specialist on my Studer A800 MKIII, which can be a real bear compared to the relatively simple MCI. Hey, at least the manuals for your machine aren't written in technical German! And most parts are not too hard to find.

There was something wrong with the red ones that MCI used on most of their machines. If you're lucky somebody will have alreeady done the replacement.

The two best days of my life?
The day I rolled the MCI JH into my studio, and the day I rolled it out 15 years later. LOL
^^^ Great deal for someone willing to do the work. It got to be towards the end, that it cost me $500 every time I turned it on. Make no mistake, these guys need a tech handy - or someone willing to learn and do the maintainence. BUT, they are the best sounding 2" out there IMO.

Man this thing is local! Well I don’t have the $$$ and even if I did I have already owned 2 early MCI 2in machines and while my wife won’t kill me if I buy a 2in she will kill me if I buy another MCI ! They do sound great but these beasts just are not built like Studer, 3m Ampex, or Otari ! But they do sound good!

OT, but what's a reel of 2" cost these days and who makes it? I'm so far away from tape today I don't know. All the tape I have is in boxes, as are my 12tk, 2trk machines. I DO have a NOS box of new AKAI 12trk cassettes somewhere in my pile of stuff.

This is a pretty smoking deal on a tape machine. I kind of want to buy it out of principle. But....

Who was the guy, based near Nashville, who came out with a hardware product that synced tape machines to DAWs, wherein you could re-use the reels of tape and use the machine as a front-end to the computer? I forget the name of the product, but it seemed trick, though expensive. His ads were showing Aerosmith using it. If money were no object.........

You can still get single use 2" without sticky shed for cheap on eBay.
I picked up 10 tapes from some guy for 150$. All seem good.
