Hi guys, had my internet i-mac running Tiger upgraded to El captain recently because Tiger wouldn't allow a newer browser and thus couldn't open many web sites. it scared me because of the age (2008) of the computer but it's done and working fine.
Am somewhat emboldened by this to upgrade my recording comp , 2010 MB Pro (Snow Leopard) to El Captain as it will allow me to open newer plugs etc, etc.
As my recording set up has been flawless, I am also very wary.
What issues should I be concerned about?
Set up is: 2010 17" I5 MB Pro, O.S. 10.6.8. 'Tools 10 (with the option to upgrade to 11). MH ULN-2, Prism Titan
Cheers, Ross

My non Music Computer (conected to the Internet) is a 2010 Mac Mini & I went from 10.6.8 to El Capitan with trepidation and the result was 100% flawless. I also upgraded the ram & it's faster than ever. My Mac Pro that is dedicated to music is due for an upgrade but not sure when & to what OS.

I made that jump last year on my 8-core Cheese grater. All has been well, but I kinda miss Snow Leopard sometimes, for perhaps only the mac aesthetics. It was a truly Great OS! The only gripe I have with the new Mac OS is somewhat clumsy gui comparatively speaking.

im trying to do the same thing, but ive spent hours and hours trying to find a version of OSX 10.11 to download and install.
The app store won't let me do it since they say I have to upgrade to the newest OSX Sierra, but I don't want to do that cause I'm on some old software that isn't supported for Sierra.
If anyone knows where to get OSX 10.11 and can let me know, I will send you a billion dollars on Paypal!!!!!

If you're already running 64bit than you've taken care of the biggest problem already. Still, I'd double and triple check compatibility on all your software before you upgrade. If it were me I'd leave well enough alone.

FWIW, I stayed put at 10.6.8 for as long as I could. When I finally gave in (due to plug upgrades etc) I went to 10.9.5. Staying put here for as long as I can.
Reason being, I'd heard it said by some mac / studio folks that seemingly know what they're talking about, that 10.9 is kinda like the new 10.6.8 in so far a stability. Perhaps true but? No issues here (I use Nuendo 7)

I did the same thing, stayed at 10.6.8 as long as possible, then 10.9.5. Last year I upgraded to 10.10.5, it was ok. Recently upgraded to 10.11.6. Very happy with this version, feels snappier than 10.10.5 and seems more stable on a 2008 Mac Pro (as well as a 2015 MBP that initially came with 10.10.5). YMMV.

Go at least to Sierra. El Capitan had issues with graphics drivers that really affected the GUIs of several DAWs (including LogicX) and plugins. I spent a lot of time optimizing plugs to get around these inefficiencies. Apple never admitted a thing, but suddenly (and magically) things improved considerably with Sierra. In wide parts of the developer community, El Cap was called "El Crapitan".

What is the last PT version that works (flawlessly) with HD Accel (& TDM, RTAS)?

Personally running HS and with the current update with logic not aware of any problems. I ran all the os’s the thread refers too. I would say HS is as good as the best and I guess arguable better as it supports logic’s new features?

I understand that eBay or any other used site would be the only way to get old OSXs, but I've been told that its very possible and easy for people to essentially add anything they want into the OSX code to log keystrokes or any other viruses/ways to steal information.
I'm a bit hesitant to buy an OSX on the second hand market, unless its a sealed CD package but my understanding is they stopped putting them on CD's many versions ago.
Anybody have any other personal stories/ideas for getting old OSX versions?

You can download them from the App Store....and save the disk image prior to installing it (and in fact without installing it at all)....you just have to have "bought" them--they have been free for years. They will sell you 10.8.5 for $20 which is the last paid OSX version.

That's my main problem, I never downloaded an OSX from the app store after 10.8, so it won't let me download any of them. They only let you download the most recent OSX, which at this point most of my software doesn't support! But it will support OSX 10.11 if I could get my hands on it somehow....

So, I have 10.11....but, if that's the last one Apple says your machine can do, you historically do NOT want that-at least I wouldn't....I call it the "nudge OS"--they historically will support it until it gets painfully slow, then cut it off on the NEXT release....so, a machine whose last supported is 10.11 should be looking at 10.10 probably....unless there's some make or break reason you HAVE to have 10.11. I unfortunately don't have 9 or 10. I actually think I have 11 from the wife's laptop--as I've never run that. If you need it--it's about 6.3gb. I've got it broken into 7Zip archives so that my NAS doesn't keep shitting the bed with larger than 2gb files. So, send me a PM with an email if you need it....and whether you're familiar with spanned archives, or if I need to put it back together and try to get some way to send the single humongous disk image.
