Jerome has a set. I just shot them out against the 6.5 and dyn lyd 48s and I kept the 6.5.
The 5.0 are really good but I found the 6.5 just represented the mid to lower bass more authoritatively and with more presence and clarity.

Noooo
He's talking about the brand new twin 50's. They just put these out like a few days ago and I'm seriously pissed. That would've been the pair I got. Oh well, I'm more than happy with what I have, but they look killler.

The thing about these are they're 2.5 way. So you're getting exactly what I've been talking about in a more precise and less stressed way. One woofer is doing the low-mid and the other is doing the rest of the lowend.
If I was someone that bought any of the Shapes and you still are in the window of returning, do it, and get these. I'm seriously pissed that my rep didn't tell me these were on the horizon. If I'd known that I would of waited, but someone wanted to make a end of the year sale and they just lost my business.

Do you even need subs? What subs would you recommend? And could these be considered mid-field?

I'd always run subs..... I think the KRK 10 is a good one a lot of guys use. I use a pair from Seismic Audio that I modified, I ended up paying like $400 for both of them maybe? They also have a passive radiator where the port is although you can't see it. I wouldn't suggest getting that pair unless you know how to mod the circuit, otherwise you're not going to be very happy, but, if you mod them they are an absolute steal for the money.
Best way to go is those KRK's. I think Mackie also has a new 10" sub out as well that is supposed to be good. I always listen to the speakers without the subs first to see how much of the low's I'm getting, that determines how much of the subs I'm going to add in. Usually its just a pinch, just enough to fill out the bottom so I can hear a nice flat spectrum. Now if you're just using them for tracking and not mixing, then crank those subs up, the low-end energy always made me track better, gave me more ideas etc. When it comes to tracking you want to be inspired by how awesome things are sounding, and when things are massive and flattering they sound awesome, so I don't know if I'd go with these to track with, the Mackie HR824's or even those KRK 10-3's are much more fun to track on. These speakers are meant for critical listening and do their best work at low to mid volumes.
Conversion wise I just discovered Dangerous has a new converter, the Convert 2 + Holy smokes I'm getting that A/D. I don't care if I have to sell off some of my island gear, I'm getting that A/D. I do believe the RME ADI-2 DAC will be my D/A as well, so I'll have about $3,500 in just my monitoring and printing conversion, but to me that's where it's the most critical.

You might want to check into running dual subs...... I was critical of it when some heavy hitters on here suggested it, but I wouldn't ever go back to a single sub again. Honestly if Ship were still with us today I'd imagine he'd venture into the new technology that is out there now. Those new Mackies and KRK's really are great for the money. If you can find some that are sealed or have a passive radiator setup it'll only increase your accuracy. Sorry, I'm just really against ported designs unless its a really hi-end company that has put a tremendous amount of time into R&D and also using DSP to correct the issues ported cabs have. It's less noticeable in subs, yes, but when you have a truly sealed or passive radiator setup you can definitely feel and hear the difference in the translation.

It sounds really good in my room, and I haven't had any problems with getting the lowend right, but I do want to venture into something like you have suggested once I get my top mains right. I have the HR824's and I like them, my genetics are having some issues, I have had them since 1995. That Convert 2+ is sweet.

Well as long as you understand that the Shapes are more focused on being extremely accurate rather than flattery, I can't suggest anything else that would beat them out, unless you get into the really expensive ATC's. These Focal Twin Shapes will probably rival or even beat out speakers like Barefoot's.

I heard the flagship Barefoot's at a buddies studio up here...They sound larger than life like the band is right in front of you! Huge power and just big and robust sounding, but I 'm not sure if it was his room or if those speakers are more about just larger than life and less accurate?

Not just dual but true stereo subs !!! I’ll say it again but the big problem with mono subs is the comb filtering in the octave above the crossover point. This is the suck out you often hear with mono subs. If you are going to go the mono route somebody has a nice Rythmik on Reverb! But what we really need is somebody to build a monitor controller with real bass management with switchable high pass & low pass for various high mid combinations and separate high pass for running mid highs “full range “!

FWIW, I have been a dealer for Focal Pro since 2007. And I learned about them the first day of the NAMM show. Lately, The Distributor isn't always giving us the details, at the moment they are needed, so we reach out. So, maybe give the guy a bit of slack on the doing buisness part.

In a smaller room, is there no need for the twins if the quality is the same as the Shape 50's from 50Hz up?

To me the advantage would be that the low-mids and lows are split between two 5" drivers. They already translate that range extremely well, but with splitting things up it would be even better. I'd imagine the imaging and punch would be much much better, along with translation.

That right?

Not exactly split no, but if you think of it in terms of load on an individual driver the 40-180 doesn't have to deal with any of the low-mids and those are mainly concentrated on one driver. What I love the most about my Shapes specifically the 50's is how the driver handles the low's/low-mids. If you're hearing it bust or it doesn't feel right that is exactly what you're going to get near about anywhere you play the material. If one driver is still doing that but another is able to portray the "fluff" without that, you will get a smooth and accurate image of that critical listening area.
Brilliant design, wish I could had held out for them, but my 50's are amazing, so not a big deal.
And I also didn't realize dealers were not advised on new products a month or so out..... It used to be that way. I guess with social media and such the problem of things getting leaked is pretty massive.

One thing I liked about the Adam A7X's is that low mid you speak of. I could hear exactly what was going on with the low mids in that speaker, but couldn't stand the rest of the speaker.

Can't say why until I try em, haha! The difference is probably more about power and overall dispersion. But as pointed out, different crossover point and less intermodulation. Every room is different, (requires a different speaker for each set of chosen ears) so take the specs with a grain of salt.
