All this talk about Izotope Ozone 8 has me ready to download the demo and give it a try. I've compared features on the Izotope website but wondering if most are using advanced or standard. I saw where I can get the code for digital download for advanced on Amazon for $399 which seems pretty good compared to $499 everywhere else.

Honestly I'd save up and grab the Advanced version. There are going to be a lot of little features and some big ones that you will want full access to.
There is a record playing all over country radio right now that was done not by a mastering house but just simply by Ozone. You can totally trust it to put out a solid file with no inter-sample distortion or distortion from poor gain staging that you can only hear once the material is being played back over iPhones etc.
Just a great piece of software that I use every day and on every single mix and ref that I submit.

Yeah get the advanced. The ability to reference other mixes and the tonal balance plug are killer.

Nope, wasn't me. I can give you guys some nuggets on things like this but I just can't go into details. Wish I could, but something like this I know neither the label or artist would want anyone knowing specifics. Particularly this one because it actually was mastered but the mixing engineer simply beat out the mastering guy. That's not a knock on ME's, not by any means. Those guys can seriously make you look flawless, but, in some cases, the mixing engineer is so tuned into how the track's are flowing that it just doesn't need to go to a ME.
The reason I even mentioned it was because in our world it's extremely hard to get those RMS levels and not have some type of inter sample distortion or just distortion happening somewhere in the gain staging between either plugins or hardware and those things you can't hear until you compress it and listen on an iPhone or even in the car at a high volume. With Ozone, and being able to bring in those reference files along with Tonal Balance, it's really amazing how good a job it does at reaching a target EQ, compression and limiting and now have that distortion. The fact that you can get to RMS levels in the -8's or even -7's and a -.01 peak and not have distortion, that is just truly amazing. Izotope really has changed the game with Ozone 8.
Another great thing with Ozone 8 is if you are wanting to utilize the reference tracks and tonal balance you can simply bypass the loudness section. This is how I use it to prepare my final prints for the ME. I can also listen to how the tracks will sound when they are compressed into .mp3 or .m4a etc. and I can make adjustments to my mix just listening to what is lost in the compression by soloing what is being lost. I can't tell you how much that helps me create a more solid track, and it mostly is to do with phase somewhere in the tracks. The Little Lab's phase tool or auto-align is a great tool to have when you do this, and the best way to find the culprit is to go from the top of your mix and start to mute each track until it rears it's ugly head!
I could honestly go on and on about how Ozone and the Tonal Balance have helped me in the final stages of my mixes but it'd take forever. I'm happy to answer any questions though if anyone has any. Also if anyone has any questions regarding the RX products I'd be glad to share how I use it to fix problems as well. The best thing to get from Izotope is the whole damn bundle. That has RX, Ozone, Neutron, Trash and the VocalSynth. I can't say enough about Izotope's quality and being so cutting edge, great company and products.

I haven’t bothered importing a song into Tonal Balance...but I need to pick out some mixes I really like to see what they look like in TB.

Side bar: Randomly put vocal synth on a guitar part one time and it was seriously awesome.
Was never able to repeat the effect in other tunes/parts as it was very melody dependent, and I was only using the plug at an aquainances place. I’ll pick up a copy one day.

I've been demoing Neutron 2 Advanced and Ozone 8 Advanced for the past couple of days and I may just have to buy these. These are seriously great plug-ins. I think you could easily do an entire mix with just these and a little delay and reverb (or Bricasti if you have one). I love the ability to be able to run my mix against reference tracks for the final print track. I also find them useful as a learning tool by letting it do it's thing and then going back and really looking at what it actually did. I kind of feel like it's cheating but I guess the end result and getting the sound you want is what matters since as someone said, there are no rules in mixing as long as you get the result you are hearing in your head (minus the voices .

Along a similar train of thought, I want to see what happens if you put different types of audio into convolution reverbs as the ir. Like someone yelling or talking. Or a strummed acoustic guitar. Could be vocoder esque

I wish the dynamic EQ allowed you to solo the band - or have I just missed that somewhere? Ozone 8

You can definitely solo the band on the multi-band comp..... But I don't see where you can on the dynamic eq. I find myself using the multi band more than the dynamic eq..... I love that you can use each band in parallel.

I love that you can use each band in parallel. I’ve mostly used this on the master for final tweaks. I usually go to FF Pro-MB for MB comp and the UAD Sonnox Dynamic EQ for dynamic EQ. I like that the guis have extra real estate...but I probably need to dig in deeper with the individual modules - not even sure I’ve done that yet.

I'm starting to realize that Izotope is one of the big players in the game. It's pretty impressive when you count the fact that they only have a handful of plugins... but they can all do so much, and so well!

I went ahead and purchased the music production suite that has Ozone 8 Advanced, Neutron 2 Advanced, RX 6 standard, vocal synth, Trash, and Nectar. Found a deal that was too good to pass up. The more I learn about Ozone and Neutron, the more I like them.
