Literally. In my studio, all of a sudden I hear the sound of scampering claws across the wood floor and a huge boom. Upton on the ground. Pick it up and the capsule looks like Joe Theisman’s leg. No outside damage and luckily no capsule damage. Just snapped the mount. Haven’t tried to turn it on as I’m going to take it to Shannon to see if he can put it on another mount. I hear a little rattling, but don’t see any issues on the inside.
Couple of new rules: 1) No more dogs in the studio 2) Don’t put your $4000 mic on a stand from Guitar Center
I just called and bout a Triad Orbit stand. Going to go pick it up in a few. I had been avoiding paying $300 for a stand for years...but I just changed my mind.

Sandbags work wonders and are way cheaper than an orbit.
Good luck with the mic - hope everything is okay in there!

Hopefully it's all good. Wish I woulda taken a picture of the Warbler Mk1d my dog decided would make for a nice chew toy for a minutes last year lol.... Was in a shure bag ,and apparently in his reach; he ended up putting some good size dents & fucked the shape of the basket bad, but no punctures luckily in the mesh! I disassembled the mic, popped it out and reshaped after the fact and I was golden. Few more minutes and the capsule would've been toast though. BAD DOG! Labs

I'm not sure if I'm crying from laughing or pain on this one because I just finished cleaning up a huge dog puke in my closet! Seriously though, I always found and tried to sell a real heaven duty stand and mount with any mic that was an investment for the buyer and tried to explain shockmounts are not a great storage for mics! Nobody listened till something like this happened! Look at it this way my freind, your in very good company, I won't name names but I can think of Multiple Platinum Artist, world famous studios, Jazz legends, Grammy and Oscar winners who very sheepishly found I was right all along. While an expensive lesson, your in good company!

OUCH. Sorry John. It seems like it's my ribbons that have taken dives. Only one fatality so far, when someone pushed over a gobo that pushed over an Ampeg V4B rig (!) that took out a mic stand. Worst dominoes ever! Heavy solid base stands or sandbags, or those add-on counterweights which can also attach to tripod legs for extra weight. I just got a few of those counterweights and put them on my Atlas SB-36 booms, now I can make any heavy mic balance perfectly without even tightening the boom, which removes any angular pressure from the boom grip AND makes position changes less risky too. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/514784-REG/On_Stage_CW_3_Counterweight_3lbs.htmlthere's a 6 lb too.

I have spent a few thousand $$$ on Triad Orbit stands, be careful, although they are heavy and built beautifully, they don't necessarily stay locked in place when a heavy mic is attached to the end of the boom !
Trust me, they can slip!

Of course there's no stopping a dog, actually. Better keep them out. I once threw a frisbee and a 40 lb lab took over an old school concrete bird bath with a full load of water with it's face while turning to start chasing. Uprooted it!

Trust me, they can slip! So - I haven’t brought it in...but you’re apparently exactly right. Get a load of this. I buy the basic thing and arm boom for like $280. Detroit tells me it’s there and all i have to do is go pick it up. I’ve bought VK stuff before so i carved out an hour because they’re terrible. I thought an hour for a pickup that i had paid for would be plenty. I get there and I lo and behold They can’t find it. One hour later after incredible inefficiency and listening to multiple sales Pitches to other people I get my shit. It was a demo peice from the beginning, so i notice he brings up a dual-arm version of the “boom” I bought - the single arm boom. I start playing with the dual arm boom and NEITHER of the arms will tighten. Ok - so look. There I am. They charged virtually full price for a piece of shot that took me an hour to get. (They finally got the peice I’d paid for) I mean wtf - am I gonna complain that I got the dual arm too? It doesn’t fucking work. So what the hell. Anyway - to confirm what you were saying - yeah beware of triad orbit.

Geez. John, I 'liked' your post, but I didn't like it at all. Awful story.
The sandbag tip is good, on a tripod. But any largesize dog in a small studio like mine would be kaos too. I'm lucky that way. I've got a long haired mini daschund with legs about 3 inches long. And she doesn't like the vibe in my room. She books time elsewhere.

I have to say, Don...I cut off one of my dog’s legs and they were still rambunctious. Was going for another but wanted to wait for advice.

Had an INCREDIBLY bad VK experience today. Look - I like those guys - but the Nashville thing is worse than ever. Anyway, I call, it rolls over to national. I buy through them. Make sure it’s available to pick up immediately. Well, I get there and promptly wait for - AT LEAST 45 minutes. I was cool about it - didn’t have anywhere to be...but the pro Audio conversation I heard from two different sales people was EGREGIOUS. They were both extremely kind, and apologetic, but it was a mess. I heard several suggestions that were absolutely basic compared to what we talk about here every day. In fact, I would venture to say that the large majority of people here would be AS knowledgeable if not MUCH more. I also heard one of the guys giving incorrect info about some items. It was disappointing. On top of that - while I waited for an hour - I watched them talk to two sets of customers.one customer set his price point at $3500 for a mix pre but didn’t know the difference between tube and ss. Was gonna walk out with one. Sad. Anyway, there was a more savvy set before hand and the conversation got onto tube pres. And to my surprise, the salesperson suggested the retro and coil stuff. Really sang the coil praises. He even mentioned that they were coming out with the single channel rca pre ca-70. I couldn’t stand it anymore and spoke up. I mentioned that I thought he ca-70 was actually a Gates SA-70 inspired pre...and then pulled out he picture that Steve had just sent me. The sales guy was a bit flomoxed. But I think I sold a CA-70 . Anyway - ALL this to say. Shouldn’t the premier place to buy high end pro Audio be filled With people that use the shit?

It's been like that in retail forever I think. Audio sales people are low paid, I know, cos I used to be one. The good ones eventually leave or find other sources of audio income/work. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys...

My brother in law's wonderful, loving and playful black lab came into the living room to greet me, then ambled over to my cherished Roy Noble and for some inexplicable reason pushed it with his nose enough to set it off the plenty of an angle leaning position on the couch. I couldn't react quickly enough. Time slowed down and I watched and then heard the crack as the back of the headstock made contact with the ground. My heart stopped and the world turned black. Upon inspection I could see the truss rod through the splintered crack where the headstock meets the neck. Thank goodness that my guitar guy is amazing at what he does. A bunch of repair guys I originally took her to were going to completely break off the stock and glue it back on, but I negated those foolish thoughts and am glad I did. One cannot barely feel the repair now that it was done exactingly and she once again plays and sounds like the goddess that she is. Labs!

You pay peanuts, you get monkeys... Some of us were very well paid, but unfortunately you have to start somewhere! It takes a special type of geek who is going to read up on all this stuff & remember the particulars, know in this day in age the net sure can help! You also need to balance the ability to sell, and troubleshoot ( hey when I left FullCO I had the same computer permissions as the owner which meant I could have changed the code!) Here is the thing, in all areas brick and mortar retail is killing its self! It dose this by going the opposite direction of its advantages! 1 almost all stores & their systems are designed to keep you there rather than get you in and out quickly, If I had time I wouldn't be here duh! 2 staff the place with people who can answer your questions! 90% of large online sales people on the phone or I chat are reading from a script ! Pay somebody who knows and gives a shit! It's sad but not a surprise VK, has increased its physical foot print but is still a pretty small shop and it is expensive to spend the time & money to train its staff! As far as time to use the stuff well shit I started my day at 7:30 AM, doors opened at 9 and was lucky to be out the door at 6:30 doors closed at 5:30 plus seldom took lunch & would be taking calls from special clients 24/7!

My ex studio partner had his dog in the studio all the time, while it was nice to have a lovable pooch around, she was for many people a distraction and used to scare the crap out of some of the clients (Big dog). I'd like to think that you could possibly check your local digger's list or musician's want ad for a high quality stand too from a private studio owner. Built with real metal and built to last. My partner at Handsome has some seriously heavy old school mic stands with boom arms that look like they came off the Nautilus. Thanks -L.

Man those old heavy duty stands are getting harder and harder to find, plus finding one that isn't beat and stripped to hell!
