I see a lot of comparison threads, and threads discussing the characteristics of different pres, but what’s your absolute favorite preamp? Call it your desert island pre, or the one you would be happy to be stuck with forever, but what do you dig about it? Did you fall in love at first listen, or did it take some working with it for some time to really appreciate it? Just curious as I’m in the process of selling some gear, re-evaluating what I really need, and what has real world worked for me over time.

Martech MSS-10. I've owned 2. Foolishly sold one once but I can't seem to do without this pre. It's a money channel pre. Just perfect sounding. Clean but far from boring. Adds weight without grit.

312. Probably my desert island preamp. Makes things present but not overbearing, while still sounding tight.

Probably the Nightpro PreQ3. MAAG precursor. Seems to always work.

Probably be Gates SA-70, or SA-20, or RCA BA-2. Bigger, fatter, more focused, more finished, less to do to it later. I had ten SA-70's at one point, dropped back to five, not sure I made a good call there, but, there's so many preamps here.....
I cut drums on some demos today using MK47/Thiersch Blue as OH into Collins 6P, Senn MKH30 into Gates SA-70 on K, and a Senn MKH800T and MKH30 in double MS for the room into Gates SA-70's, and I really can't think of a more satisfying result (other than owning some non-crap cymbals). Mics all about equal in volume, nothing you absolutely gotta EQ, nothing to compress/limit.

Great River MP-2NV for me.
The Neve sound just sounds 'correct' to my ears. Every time I compare pres, the 1073ish variant (if it's good) always involuntarily makes me grin. I had the Heritage DMA-73 for awhile and compared the MP-2NV to it and they were damn near identical sounding (no surprise) with the Great River sounding just a hair smoother in the upper mids. So I kept it. I can't think of a thing more I'd want out of a mic amp.

I also really like Colin's AML ez1073 rackmount unit. Everything sounds great through that preamp.

I did enjoy the Great River as well. I keep coming back to Neve inspired preamps as being my favourite.

Tree Audio The Branch II. Classic tube sound. It just sounds "like a record" to me.
For vocals and acoustic guitars I don't need to think about using anything else. Plus it has the EQ and opto comp.

Chandler TG2, no idea if that's supposedly "Neve inspired" but I do love how it sounds. Transparent and coloured (in a good way) all at the same time.

I know (the EMI logo is staring at me as I type), but I've never heard a Neve, so no idea how "Nevey" it is or isn't!

I’ve had my GML 8304 for a long time, it’s clean and transparent but has a little something extra on the top end that I like on acoustic instruments.
Besides that, i really appreciate anything with a high pass filter and the ability to drive the input and bring down the output for some character. For that the VP28 gets the prize. The Chandler Germanium does some cool things as well, I like it on electric guitar and electric bass in particular. It’s one of the few things I’ve used that has a unique sound of its own

My original Neve 1073 Preamps that I bought from Brent Averall. Back in the early 1980's he had his shop in his backyard in Sherman Oaks, Ca. Thay were rack mounted with a separate power supply and at whopping $3000.00 for a pair, I at first had buyers remorse. Until I fell in love. They were my number one pres for many years along with Dean Jensen's Boulder twin servo Pres. Up until that point the Harrison console pres were the only ones I ever used. Then came the Diy and clone revolution. Now I have Too many to choose from.

For a tube based pre the Gyraf G2. Everything you put through it sounds like a record. Solid state pre's I'd have to say Neumann PV76's or Calrec UA8000 pre's.

Hey there @hermetechmastering just trying to help/clarify...the TG has its own sound, no relation. Post the EMI TG console period ending with the MK IV / 1974, Neve was contracted to make Neve consoles for EMI.
