More and more I'm starting to think monitoring is the most important building block in the whole pyramid. Most of my work these days is mixing - and I have enough nice creative pieces to put together cool demos (guitars, pres, kempers, keys, drums) I really, really love the Symphony MkII...so...
Just wondering if there are suggestions for good cheapish, active monitors...Maybe it would be good to have some kind of consumer product to really hear what it's going to sound like...or hell, maybe I should just plug in some ear buds and be done with it.

I almost pulled the trigger on a pair of klipsch r-15pm as the were on ridiculous sale on Black Friday for this reason. The other ones I were looking at were JBL LSR305s. Both cheap-ish, neither “pro grade”.
Looks like guitar center has the JBLs for $99 ea on sale fwiw.

What are you working on now? Still the amphion?
iK iLoud monitors are actually pretty cool.
Do you have 10’s?

I can’t recommend the Eve audio stuff enough. Even the smaller stuff packs quite a punch. The new sc203’s only require one outlet, and they are small enough to be something different than typical near fields while still being useful and fun to work on.

Has anyone experienced the KII's (Kii Three)? And how do they compare with the Amphions?

Yeah - the more I think about it, the more some kind of consumer product makes sense. Anyone used that Audified Mixchecker plugin?

Yeah I like to check mixes on laptop speakers and a Bose revolve we got for my son.
The laptop will tell you if bass 2nd harmonics are audible or kick is too pointy or vocals too loud or too soft, and the Revolve is almost a mono source with exaggerated bass, so it's useful for hearing if midrange is clear and projecting enough or bass a tad overdone.

I find it difficult to judge bottom on the Bose stuff, since even great recordings sound wooly on it. I've got the second gen Soundlink bluetooth speaker, and the way it sounds best is out in a room, well away from any boundaries. The computer desktop speakers are a bit better balanced.
The way I know the top end is too hot or not is on AKG 712Pro's or the B+O system in my wife's car. None of my monitors are that hyped on the top, but you know such systems exist.

I use two very different mono small speakers: A fancy Tivoli Audio kitchen radio (I stuffed some Auralex foam in the bass reflex port) and an Avantone Mixcube (powered). Both give me very useful information without sounding like crap.

I use a set of Yamaha HS50M's with the mid boost engaged.

... the B+O system in my wife's car... My wife's car has a B+O system and I can't for the life of me ever make it sound decent. I have no idea why but it either sounds rolled off or shrill with nothing in the middle. It was expensive too.

I have no idea why but it either sounds rolled off or shrill with nothing in the middle. It was expensive too. I have the B+O eq set for one notch down on both bass and treble. Most commerical music sounds ok, but it will reveal too much top end on my stuff before any of my other speaker references. Knowing systems like that are out there makes me realize I have to take that into account. Texting mixes to my phone and laptop and then bluetoothing makes checking in cars easier than it used to be. I rent a lot of cars when I travel. The eq settings you find from the last renter on the car radios are all over the place, but mostly smiley faced, with a lot of boost and never any cut. That would be terrible on the B+O premium system.

The mix cubes are a classic for what you are after, I think.
Off the shelf, I'd probably look at some passive Avantones.
