I thought the Sowter transformers in stam ‘s 73 sound fantastic. Super natural on top without sounding 2 dimensional. Wait till you hear the new ones!, I have been working with Brian Sowter dissecting some original LO116 Marinairs for a while, the second batch of the 1073MK2 will have them (shipping late Feb), these are the closest sounding transformers ever made to a LO1166, I actually will send a unit to Jerry Barnes (Bass player of Chic) with a Sowter 1166 in one channel and a Marinair LO116 on the other one to see if he can hear any difference. The new 1073MK2 also comes with a line input transformer (Carnhill) and retails at just 799.00 The Sowter version is 899.00 I also added NOS carbon resistors like used back in the date and a Toshiba 2N3055 output transistors which is the original one. Finally there are the capacitors, Vishay of course. This is probably the second most important thing on a 1073 replica.

I'd love to see you release a 1073 with the EQ... maybe even the 1081 or 1084 EQ which is superior to the 1073 EQ. Just a suggestion.

I’ve kinda sparred with Joshua on the forums over a few things but his sonics speak for themselves. I admit I’m more than a little tempted by the 1073mpa two channel unit. stam, is the Feb batch (according to the site) of the 1073mpa the MKII version?

Joshua, If you have a unit with the new sowter TF and the original can you do some A/B tests or get someone like Ragan to do it for you as he does amazing tests which we have heard of the 3U audio mic stuff. Some A/B stuff on drums and even a quick fully tracked song if possible.

If they are that close I would buy a few and I dont need any... I have like 12 channels of Neve style here already and a few expensive preamps not even hooked up (Avalon 2022) for example... LOL

What I heard with the Stam is that it was darker than other clones...and I mean that in a good way. Kind of darker like the BAE, but with a nice three dimensional tone.

In my SA73 shootout, the SA73 is richer and more complex than the UAD 1073 unison pre. I can't say how that relates to other hardware clones, but I always think of "dark" as not enough highs, maybe wooly, like it's missing something, but I think the SA73 sounds tight and full in the lower frequency range, much like the original Neve does. I can only imagine how cool an updated version would be.
Skip to 5:33 if you just want to hear the mix comparisons.

The 33114/33115 console I worked on for awhile also gave the impression of dark, everything below 1K was weighted so predominantly. Pavement's Brighten The Corners was done on that console, among others.

I was meaning darker compared to other Neve clones. @sozocap and I have talked about this. I think it’s the carnhills are a little brighter which isn’t necessarily bad. I think you had the carnhills in that one though, right Martin?

Martin's has the Sowter. Sounds really really sweet to my ears. My go to Great River has Sowters too.

I think you get what you bought... Not the upgraded version. You could contact Stam and see what the upgrade would be. My point was I'd like the one that was promised to me first, not particularly caring for the fact that there's a MKII on the way.
