I found some rather excellent mini monitors. Made by Emotiva from Nashville (Franklin). These are 2 way 5 1/2" speakers called the B1. 7" wide, 10 3/4" tall and 8 inches deep. These use a cloth fiber woofer and a large area air motion transformer (AMT) tweeter. They do 48~27k hz. Rear ported, these have an astonishing amount of low end.
The AMT tweeter is quite good, very low THD, zero spit and a very smooth extended response. Dome tweeters sound a bit rough to me, these are like butter. I can't find anything wrong with them response wise, they are rather flat. Acoustic stuff is stunning with incredible detail and excellent ambience imaging.
They should probably sell for between 1~2k $. The price is $299 shipped to your door. They have a 30 day evaluation period so they are safe to try out.

Hey Jim - you checked out any of the power amps? Any thoughts on thei amp lines? I'm generally not a fan of powered monitors. The reason is the amps are never that great. There is a large discussion group over there using the same format and host you are here. Just sign up with your same login. Users complain about the harsh sound of the amps. I use modified Adcom power amps here so I don't need a powered solution. I also have their T1 model in the TV room, those are also excellent speakers. They just won the Absolute Sound buyer's guide for budget component of the year.

Yeah. Not what I’m talking about. They make amps for passive monitors.

Johnkenn I have the Emotiva XPA-200 as my main amp... it's terrific. The only thing I don't like are the connectors. I wish they would just use Neutrik or something industry standard for the XLR. The sound, however, is fantastic.

What about using 2 - C1's for left and right. It's listed as a center channel speaker but the specs look good It'd be like some Westlake speaker setups I've seen. www.emotiva.com/Jim, Any word on the mod to my Adcom GFA 555 PRO power amp? It's gonna sound great with these speakers.

+1 on the amps... My Pass X250 needed service. Was going to rent one for $800 and someone told me "you could just buy a XPA-2 for that" so I did. Freakishly good sounding amp. Kept it as a backup. Bought another as a backup. Sold the Pass X250 and took the family to Disney World.

I'm also not a fan of powered speakers.
I just took the Emotiva plunge, buying their little BasX A-100 amp ($229) for my Dynaudio BM6 passives.
I'm in the "waiting on shipment" phase...

I’d really like to try the gen 3. I had two mono block Emotivas- can’t remember the name of them like xpl-1 or something. I ultimately thought the top end on my current Lexicon (Bryston 3bst) sounded better.

@ Cowboy -- I believe they're both first-gen -- Non-modular, etc.
@ Johnkenn -- I'd imagine you'd still find a bit more top on the Bryston. I've always found Bryston to have a certain - ummm - "excitement" (?) in the top end that works very well with a good bunch of speakers. Actually I'd bet I could go back to my 4B's on my Tylers without missing a beat. Only got rid of them while using the B&W Nautilus 802's, where that "excitement" was ripping my ears out. But still using a (2BLP pro?) on my smaller Tylers (D4M's) and there's definitely still a certain "sweeter tweeter" factor in there (in a nice way).

Got my $229 Emotiva amp (BasX A-100) this evening.
WOW!
My evolution/progression powering my Dynaudio BM6P (D/A output from my Metric Halo LIO8): 1. Hafler p3000: bloated mids 2. Topping TP60 (class D, chi-fi): ETCHED mids. Suprisingly excellent to mix with, but not listener friendly -- 2D soundstage 3. Emotiva BasX A-100: detailed mids, luxurious deep 3D soundstage
The Topping may still be a good reference for mixing, but the Emotiva is, hands-down, a better amp. And this is the cheapest thing they offer!
The headphone amp -- driven directly from the speaker section -- is better than the headphone amp of my LIO8, and I didn't think anything could beat the LIO headphone amp.
I am going to seriously consider replacing my Marantz PM7001 integrated, on my home hi-fi, with an Emotiva unit.
Jim
