There are masters of mike technique and then there are the posers.

Saw Ozzy Osbourne the other day in a 70's live vid also doing the "grab the mic ball" number. It was one of the rare live things, where he actually was performing quite good. Sounded awful nevertheless, lol. What is this, that so many singers do this? Even experienced professional live performers? Are they deaf? Obsessive compulsive behavior? When i had the first SM58 in my hands for singing, i heard in seconds, why this is not a particularly good sounding holding technique...only usable for very specific screaming/growling/grunting/pig squealing techniques in harder metal styles....

There are masters of mike technique and then there are the posers. I wonder if there are soon to be "masters of virtual mike technique"? haha did Steven "Slate" really change his name Slate? If he did...? I believe that deserves a decent level of ridicule from all of us 8)

Martina works the mic live big time. I think she's a bit of a master at it. Song starts about 40 seconds in. There's a few big notes in this one!

There are masters of mike technique and then there are the posers. I always pull the mic back a foot or two on the big notes because it looks SOO cool. Raising the mic above your mouth like you're pouring it in while tilting your head back and to the side a little helps too )

I don't reckon I know much of anything about any mic techniques. There used to be a fella sang in a band over at the Wheatley place. I reckon he knew about mics and whatnot.

So - I can choose to use the mic with my own mic pre, right? or to get the full effect, do you have to use it with the pre?

Yes you can definitely use your own pre. I asked Steven that specific question at AES, and he said yes.
Obviously you'd try both and pick a winner. It's good to have options though. I like my preamp, so if the Slate mic works well with it, why not.

I just have no idea how this would work. You hook your mic up to an undefined preamp and the software just models a 251 out of the blue. I think the answer is this - you CAN use your own pre, but all bets are off as to what the mic will sound like.

Yeah use whatever you want, but if you want the most accurate thing they could come up with, use the two pieces that they based it off of.
There's no inherent (audio legend/pedigree/general dogma aside) scientific reason that you couldn't replicate what's going on with harmonic content and transient relationships and all the other complex things a microphone does with code. That, of course, doesn't mean this particular product achieves that, but there's nothing inherently stopping it from happening.
The latency bit will probably make it or break it for many.

You could do it but it would require a motion detector in addition to a microphone!

"Slate VMS Dance Dance Revolution. Now compatible with Kinect." Hey, I know some Japanese girls that would love to play Dance Dance Revolution against Steven Slate.

Advantage, Apollo. Maybe folks will get used to recording 'dry' with Slate's mic or whatever, and tweaking the vocal sound post. I'm doing that live lately, I like hearing some delay and 'verb on my vocal monitor mix, but I've been monitoring dry and paying attention to pitch and performance, knowing it's going to sound better in the FOH mix. I'm curious to read or see some reviews of the VMS setup. Anybody seen one outside of Steven's?
