For what?
it all depends. All have their uses and are different.
60 is pretty dated, noisy, somewhat bandwidth limited and overall sound limited. It's got a cool small room ambience though. That's all I ever used it for. They break a lot too.
70 has the classic "tile room" - and if that's what you want, the 70 is it. Also noisy, but not as bad as the 60. Mono in, stereo out.
80/81 is probably the most versatile, and the best bargain per what it will do. Some multiFX, and decent verb, although not spectacular. Stereo in/out.
90 - mostly verb oriented, and dated, and personally, I'd rather have their native PCM reverb package - by a factor of 10X's. Also true stereo like the 80/81.
The PCM92/96 are cool. But essentially they are identical (michael can speak to this) as the PCM verb plugins. If you're running tape / console and no computer, this would be a contender - but I'd go Bricasti first. No reason to buy the 96 - it just has the flawed and horrific firewire connector. The 92 is the one if this is your lane.
Beyond that you're in the megabuck 480L, 960 and 224L range, and I'm guessing that's outside your scope.....

60, 70, 80, 90? Something else entirely? Stay away from the 60... They use obsolete chips that can't be found, if repairs are needed. Pcm70 for the Tiled Room sound, and the coloration they give. 80-91 just get cleaner with better io options. I just bought an 80, should have it next week. Got a really good deal on it.

I sold my 60. That thing made some thick gooey verb sauce, but the noise floor was too high for my tastes. Also, as I recall it was mono in - stereo out.
EDIT: Hah, just read Drbill's.. We agree.

I am pretty sure it was Jim that said nothing can be done to improve the noise of the 60 since nothing is compatible with current parts on the market.

Mainly as verb and not multiFX? If so, PCM92 by a long stretch. NOTE : the 92 is radically more advanced than the 90/91 which are essentially the same. On the 80/81 and the 90/91 I think the differences between the 0 and 1's are digital i/o on the "1's" if memory serves.....standard analog i/o on the "0's".

80/81 is about all worth considering.
Price wise? They come with suggested pries!!
PCM $60 PCM $70 PCM $80 PCM $90
(just kidding, sort of...)

im also mulling over a digital verb to compliment my akg spring. holding out till namm to see if Bricasti comes through with their less expensive model. if it even has a few presets close to the big models plates or chambers id be stoked.

Is not the Lexicon PCM-Native-Bundle a mix off the best PCM algos?
