Help me decide which NOS tubes sound best

I could use a little help deciding which NOS tubes sound best in my preamp V1 and V2 spots.

Microphone – Flea U47

All vocals recorded at exact same distance with a Stedman pop filter to maintain distance.

WITHOUT PAD – Gain set to 27 dB. Examples will exhibit slight coloration/saturation of the Jensen input transformer.

WITH -20 dB PAD – Gain set to 47 dB. Examples will exhibit less coloration/saturation of the input transformer and a cleaner/transparent sound.


V1 Tubes Tested
GE 6072a Five Star
GE 12AY7

V2 Tubes Tested
Telefunken ECC82 Smoothplate
RCA 12AU7 Blackplate

Other preamps for comparison
SCA C84 (Millennia style preamp)
AML 1073 (Neve style preamp)

1. The goal of this shootout is to determine the best combination of tubes.
2. The input pad will influence the tonality.
3. The chosen combination should sound best WITH and WITHOUT the PAD.
