Guitar Cabinet Mic Shootout
It's an interesting read, and listen. One of the most thorough shootouts I've ever seen. My favorite mic is the Beyer M160. At least for right now.

I will just say from personal experience that an M160 on a Friedman (Dirty Shirley) is a great sound with very low bleed from a drum kit 8 feet away. And I'm not talking laid back over-dampened drumming either.

I tend to use ribbons on electric guitars, although when the sound is quieter I like to use condensers. I had my 44 setup for vocals the other night and my little 9watt oahu was about 10feet behind it. I had it turned on by accident during recording and the guitar sounded truly magical. Ribbons make amazing room mics. So I don't always close mic things.

Rex era recordings. I don't like an M160 right on the grill so much. It has the laser beam thing so sounds best like a foot back, otherwise it's too forward in the mix and you don't get the cabinet bloom.

the e22s is one of those SDC that for me, usually blows away everything else for rock music stuff on electric/cab setups of all shapes and sizes. Pretty much, that mic is SUPER versatile, IMHO. I would also use it for more quieter vibey stuff, but its much lower in output than other condensers. I have done some COOL stuff with e22s on electric gtrs. Though for whatever reasons, my brain likes to hear what a Ribbon mic does to it in the mid range. The E22s sounds super dope though, +1

Yeah ribbons will make guitars sound very rich and just sit nice in the mix so I like them for rhythm applications the most.
E22 without any eq will sound just like the amp but a larger than life hifi version. Has a smooth presence, punchy proximity effect, size but not mud and liquid lack of coloration like no other condenser I've heard.
Put another way, a ribbon mic you will be like, oh that's a very nice guitar sound and up close will be nice and heavy and not so close will keep things out of the foreground so listener can get on with enjoyment of the music.
E22 can take a mean sounding amp and will rip right through your chest to the back of the room without ever hurting your ears.

I liked
SM57 Sennheiser e609 and e906 Shure SM7B AKG 414 TLII Neumann U47 FET Royer R121 Beyerdynamic M160
Some of the other ones were way off. For example didn't like any of the Audio Technicas.
That's a bit of an expensive shopping list, there.
