Lolo, have you considered the Drawmer MC2.1? According to reviews, it's about the same quality as the Source but with more functionality. It doesn't have a DAC but I don't think the Kush main gain had one either, or did it?

No its doesnt. But I have the source that i can use for D/A conversion. Of which im now only using for monitoring. But if I wanna use its Dac i'll need a new monitor controller

Are you sure the Hilo is the reason the recorded vocal sounded as great as it does? Not to deter you, but I think the great vocal was due to a sum of all parts; being talent, performance, mic, room, pre, comp, time based fx in Headphones, then Hilo... I am thinkin the vocal would have sounded just as great through an avid hd I/o, apogee symph mk1 or 2, Burl, BF Apollo, etc 😀

Probably...
but no, I think the chain was Helios Sta and Hilo...think it was my old modded CV4 . This was on another dude. I really don't think the pre was a pivotal part in it - that is to say, I think another quality pre would be just as good, just a little different color...and I think the Upton is an upgrade from the CV4...but you're right...I'm just gassing.

My low budget version of the Hilo idea is the Tascam UH-7000, it's been very good to me.
Right now I am using a Drawmer MC2.1 and if any one is considering a monitor controller, this one is fantastic. Nothing bad to say about it, it feels great.
Takes the heat off of whatever DAC you choose to use (Clarett over here) and lets the MC2.1 do all the monitoring work.
To me it's the next step up from a nice 2x2 DAC/ADC with a volume knob and a headphone amp. Although those are fine too for more basic functions.

I'm soon taking my Hilo along with a pair of twin servo preamps and a couple of Rode NTR ribbon mics and my MacBook Pro to do some location live recording of a four piece acoustic group. It will be a Blumlein mic setup with main vocals/guitar center, acoustic bass opposite center, mandolin left and dobro right. Of course the band will have to mix themselves acoustically. Still finalising the location. I'll also probably take along a pair of Neumann KH120's for monitoring. Should make a nice change from multitracking, overdubbing and mixing!

Always good to get out of the house, haha. Yeah we've been in the studio finishing tracking on our longest single project yet in terms of client days. Close to around 20 days I think and we start final mixes on Monday. I've been planning a live two track location recording project for a while so it will make a change from studio cabin fever!

Last week I installed Version 8 firmware on our Hilo. Last night I reverted back to Version 7. Why? The new GUI in Version 8 is a mindfuck. As you were.
