Hello all,
For those of you who have purchased the CAPI Heiders, Have you purchased more to to replace your current API type mic pre’s that you were using or, is it just another color that you’ve added? I guess what I’m asking is, were they an upgrade?

Well, you DO know who you could buy them from, right?

I ended up dumping all my 512Vs for 6 FD312s & 4 VP28s. Does that help?

I have a rack of them and was just curious as to what others were feeling about them.

I've only had them for a little bit and have tracked some Agtr, horns, and Hammond C3 with them and the did great...but the difference in just general sonic size and meatiness between the 512s is immediately apparent. I'll have to get some more experience with them (on gtrs/vox/drums) before rendering my verdict final. How are you liking them?

I run them mainly on kick drums, snare and floor toms. They fit just right to me, sound wise. I kept my 512’s for other things. I have a rack of vp26’s I use for toms as well, the contrast between the pre’s always seems right.

Don't mean to give you a hard time (cause I know you feed your family by selling gear), but I get all excited when I read your review about a piece, and then the next week it's something else that's the best ever! Ha! I'm mostly just kidding around. Regardless, the Heiders are sweet, indeed.

For specific sounds that I like, I gravitate towards different units. I was talking about the API sound. The FD312 impresses me the most for THAT specific sound. Make sense?

As a former successful gear pusher, I accepted the fact that I did indeed have biases because of my financial interest. If asked I would be straight up about it. In fact, a local public access channel was about to purchase 20 something mics for interviews in the field and they had narrowed their choices down to either sm58's or our private SKU AT 58 killer, I had recommended one of the EV variable D's. Well they asked me what my thoughts were of these 2 in this situation, my answer " honestly $500 in my pocket in favor of the AT." Because I had always been kind honest and went above and beyond they went with the AT's and doubled the order. They liked the AT more than the 58's they had and preferred the black finish, those silver balls on 58's can throw some weird reflections in the days of SVHS. They also regretted not listening to me when I told them to wait a year before revamping all their video gear because DVC pro was about 8 months out and a large investment in SVHS would not be wise.

I would answer again more directly, to further explore my findings, and say that if there were several flavors of "API" in my collection, I would sell them off and get more FD312, having preferred their quality of sound, over the others.
Peace

I've always been curious about the NPNGs. In some of the shootouts I heard the detail and character was super noticeable. I have always wondered if that pre "caught on" as a vocal channel to compete with Martech, Avalaon, and a 1073 or if it had found more of a place on orchestral and stringed applications.

I'm keen on buying gear by weight. These FD312s are HEAVY.
Admittedly though, only two sessions of experience tracking with them but I'm liking them for what they're doing. Valid opinions will be formed a few months from now.

FD312....how much is the 167 ohm input impedance matching rather than typical bridging....anyone mod the input of a VP28 to similar and compare? Obviously you get degrees of difference from the choice of transformers and the 2520 type too.
