I use Studio A in reverb mode in parallel, multiple instances, one for each instrument group and change the mic parameters to control the added ambiance. I often mute the far mic pair, and move them around to taste. I have 12 cores of DSP so I can afford 5 or 6 instances in a session. I need to add ambience because all instruments except vocals and acoustic guitars are direct, either through the Zod ID or the Two Notes Studio, and I've found that Ocean Way adds just the right amount of simulated reality to the mix. Now there's a 21st Century concept: simulated reality. Gotta love it!

To add a bit more info, I use a home-brewed mega-patch (three snares, three kicks) in BFD 3 for drums played via an Alesis DM10X kit, but lately only port out the direct mics, with a parallel instance of Ocean Way to add back a "room". This way every instrument group sounds as if it was created inside the same space. Certainly not a new idea but it works great!

And when you say multiple instances in parallel, are we talking on aux sends? Thanks

Matt, can you give us a sound sample of this? And when you say multiple instances in parallel, are we talking on aux sends? Thanks Sure, I can link to one of our songs. Perhaps put up a drums-only mix too. Been thinking about doing it lately anyway, it's time I went public with my work. Although IMO the caliber of mixing talent on RGO is far above my level. My mix template has separate stereo Aux sends for every instrument group, where an instance of Ocean Way is on each Aux. So, I'm currently using 5 auxs: drums/acoustic guitars/electric guitars/bass/vocals. Right now I'm using Studio A for everything, but customizing each instance taking advantage of how OW lets you select different mics/mic distance and room placement for different instruments. Those of you familiar with OW will know what I mean by this. I have 12 cores of UAD so I can go nuts with plugin count. For example, I typically run bass through the plugin as follows: Studio OWRA, mode REVERB, source DRUMS1, wet solo, mic1 C12A C at 0.5 feet, which is the closest you can get to the source. The second and third mic pairs are muted. This setting gives me a touch of ambience, just enough to give the original DI source a space to sit in, and I can dial in the amount with mic selection, mic distance, and aux level. With phones on, the difference is significant in a good way. Changing the mic to omni really expands the sense of the room. Is it really detectable in a mix? I think so. My group doesn't have the luxury to record live in a great room, so I attempt to fake it with OW.
