I have a project with a drum part bounced in place. I want to change the drums, so I went to an earlier version of the song that had the original Superior Drummer 2.0 midi file and placed it on my desktop. I then went back to the project to import that file, but instead of importing the one midi file, I got around 50 piano tracks, each one with a single measure of the imported midi. I went to File > Import > Import midi file, and chose the file on my desktop. Any idea what the heck happened? I still want to import that file. This is what I got: Attachments:

I don't use Logic, but what happens if you just drag the midi file from the desktop onto a new Logic track?

Same weird thing, the files create around 50 piano files, each with one measure of midi. There's usually a good explanation for theses things, but this one's stranger than usual. I've been very happy with Logic, but it can be tricky for sure.

I think you have to export the file as a midi file and then save it to your desktop ?

Try this:
1. Create new instrument track
2. Drag and drop your file into the new track
3. Choose an instrument / sound to play the midi sequence

Kcat, I did exactly that, exported the midi file to my desktop.
Thanks for helping 79sg. That's what I was doing, but instead of the file going into the one track where I could choose an instrument, it made this weird stair step of tracks, each one with one measure of the midi file. Check out the photo I posted above.

just select them all and Merge them. Easy solution. definitely not something to freak out over. If you want to know why, you should ask the guys here, as they are in contact with the devs: www.logicprohelp.com/forum/

Thanks Chuck, I didn't think I could merge separate tracks, I've only every merged one track with several takes for a comps.
LogicProHelp is pretty good, but sometimes it takes days to get one answer. I posted there earlier.

When you created the midi file from the earlier version of the song, did you select only the regions to be exported and then choose the command 'export selected regions as midi file'? (not sure about the exact name of that command, but it's found under File/export)
The last time I did something like this I had both song versions open in Logic, selected all regions to be moved, copied to clipboard ( command C), opened the new version, made sure the track order was the same (empty of course), put the song pointer at the first bar of the regions copied and on the target tracks selected the track on top and then pasted (command V)

Maybe I'll try that, open both projects and straight copy.
I clicked on the track and then exported as a midi file. I don't recall if I highlighted all the individual sections..

Thanks guys, problem solved, for now.
Funny, the simple "Command C" worked. I was trying to follow Apple's instructions with the export/import approach, but simply opening both projects and copying and pasting worked, strange..
I ws doing all this in order to change the drums I chose in Superior Drummer. Unfortunately, the track i'd bounced in place had dozens of difficult creative edits and lots of dynamic programming. The original midi track was basic beats. So copying it would now mean I had to remember and redo all the edits, simply to change drum sounds. I'm thinking I may start liking the original drum sound a lot more now ;-)

LPX you can browse the other project in the media window (the right side pop up), select the single (or however many) tracks and import it from one to the other.....you can even have it bring over the Superior plug in and it's settings....automation on the tracks, yay/nay....etc....
