Been reading here for years but first post. Thanks everyone here for the fascinating and refined opinions. I need another pair of non-bank-breaking sdcs. Thoughts on AT 4051 vs Josephsen C42? More for overheads/perc than acoustic. Thanks y'all.

Hello and welcome!
Both are fine SDCs so really it comes down to your aesthetic. Both have a clear high end. AT has pad and high pass filter. C42s are cheaper.
If you can spring it, get a pair of both, try them out, and return the pair you don't want.

You didn't ask, but the 3U sdc are a good option as well. They have different capsule options with built in filter and pad switch.

Don't have the AT's but do have a pair of C42's. They are definitely on the bright side but not harsh. Their top end is not dissimilar to our KM54 although not as super focussed as the nickel capsuled KM54.

Welcome C42 , more vibe 4051 to me stale slightly clinical in comparison more edgy. I sold a ton f AT SDC but would prefer New Gefell, MBHO or Schoeps but the Josephson is a work of art and my choice of the 2!

I've got a pair of the transformerless CM100 and just got a pair of the transformer coupled Warbler 127 and the "cardioid flat" capsules that are his take on the KM84. Both are really nice. I've only had time to mess a little with the 127s but they sound lovely and will likely be a go-to for me.

There's already a thread going and I've listed several CM100 clips but I plan on posting a bunch of 127 clips soon too.

Hey Ragan how did you order the 127 and cardioid flat capsule. They're not up on their site.

C42 for days. An inline pad can sort out the level if it becomes an issue, but it can handle the SPL. Joshesons mics are well loved. A-T is often the 'good enough' choice. YMMV

I have a rather older AT 4051b, the elder model without the pad. It is a fine microphone and one which acoustic guitars, various flutes, a violin or two that I have recorded, as well as various percussion instruments such as shakers and bongos all sound wonderful. Like ericn said, they can be edgy, but with conscious placement this can be overcome, a few degrees in this or that direction can make a substantial difference in the capture. It works real well for me when recording a lead on my D-15M, for example, no eq necessary.

I agree but if you get a chance to even just hold a c42, you realize this is something else, when you plug it in and you hear it its something else. 4051 will not suck , Josephson glimpse of greatness!

Hey Ragan how did you order the 127 and cardioid flat capsule. They're not up on their site. Yep, like Mulmany said, just email him. That's the way to buy any 3U Audio stuff. He's recently re-done his shipping too (after some customs headaches) and now people are getting mics in the U.S. in like four days. That's how long mine took.

Beyer is a bargain, I always think of it as the sterile side to a KM84, it's got a lot of what the 84 brings just a bit of ahh.

Both too bright for me. I would stick with the Shure KSM137 or KSM141... seriously.

The 4051b is bright though not brashly so, that's why I copped it when the opportunity presented itself for a slim 175 noodles. In the right context, i.e., the match between guitar, player and song, it has been a fine contributing member of my slowly growing collection of microphones.
