I'll take the Sumi in all instances. To my ears, it feels a little more open, defined, and alive and the Thompson can get a little cloudy.

Both Great Sumi in a dense mix, Thompson for slower acoustic songs think Angie by the Stones or Floyd Comfortably Numb..

Excellent playing Dan. I'm leaning towards the Sumi for clarity. Both guitars are fantastic. The Thompson has some low end boom around 200-300Hz that gets muddy, even with the capo up at 3. Thompson does have some mojo to it. The more I record, play, and listen to guitars, I've come to prefer mahogany backs and sides.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.
The Thompson has a more immediate response with tighter bass. It's a lot louder too. The Sumi's low end can be a bit mushy, but it has more sparkle.
I can't wait until the Thompson gets a few years on it!

I think the Thompson will hold up better in a dense mix, but that Sumi is sweet! I say use 'em both.

Great playing and signal chain ... Helluva studio too... Y'all got a nice person in charge cutting the checks ( or maybe That someone wants to record their albums in style 😂 I would love that opportunity)
One thing , I hope the students learn to use their ears because relying on 100k room + equipment is gone be hard when they graduate and go back to low end / working class gear and bedroom and project studios! Seems like they have a great talented professor already, so that plus the room and gear will be a great learning experience...Hope they truly take advantage.. Even though I was in my school's studios a lot, I wish I had been in them even more
Edit*** I see you are the boss Dan and y'all offer 4 year Major and Minor degrees. What a cool position you have as the director! I see you also take pride in what you do 💯.
My school was nowhere near that quality. No Flea, API, just the original Audient 24 console and an icon, I think the violet designs black knight was the best mic we had to work with condenser wise, then your typical drum mics.. 421, sm57, sm58, yam sub kick..
It's all about what effort I put in ( or what the students put in ) is what results Ii got out but I dang sure don't have a bachelors or a minor degree 🤔😌...
Are y'all going to teach modern music styles ever? I did mix and master one of Wiz wonderful songs, which Steven Slate complimented me on, which was kind of folksy, singer song writer music... Sorry for the length

Thanks, Chase. Our goal at ETSU is to offer recording curriculum "for musicians," different from what some of the larger recording programs offer. By taking on the role of an engineer or producer, students learn to use the recording studio in ways that support their craft. They are always focused on the music and artistic development while in the studio. After all, microphones, whether great or bad, cheap or expensive, just sit there and dare you to play something into them.

Thompson, hands down. Just sounds so much more in tune and full of life to my ears. But clearly, you're more accustomed to the Sumi
