Quick question guys... how hard is it to convert a KM85 to a KM84? And is the difference that noticeable that you all feel that it is necessary for most normal applications?

All you would do is buy the cardioid capsule. There’s a km85 for sale here in Nashville for a similar price...but you can still get a 84 used for around $1300

Looking at two KM85s for about $1300 total... so I guess thee's no simple mod to removing the bass roll-off, Shannon ?

I think the roll off is done in the capsule.

My understanding is the capsule diaphragm is tuned a higher tension than the KK84 capsule used in a KM84 so no, there's really no mod that can be done. KM85's are still useful on high hats, close mic'd acoustic instruments etc. You got them for a good price so if the they are in good condition it may be worth buying some new KK84 capsules as you will end up with a pair of good as new KM84's.

You make some good points, and one can never have too many KM84s!! Or U89s, or U87s or.... O:)
