Take this with a pinch of salt, I sell the product, of course I am going to say good things about it, it is quite obvious that I would have picked another capsule manufacturer for the 87 if it sounded better or closer to our vintage 87. The HK87 we used on the SA87 build (or are using) sounds amazing, better than any other capsule recreation for the u87 I have tired (we tried them all), hence we choose his. In a blind shootout 90% choose our SA87 above a vintage and also a current Neumann u87, I was not sure if I was happy, for it to sound better is subjective and I also wanted it to sound the same, not better, not worse. We did some tweaking with Eric after that and it now sounds extremely close my vintage 87, I would say 95% there, if we change the name of the tracks we cant tell which one is which. The Sowter output transformer sounds magnificent as well. Ok, so you are not using a "stock" Heiserman capsule. It is tweaked to your build, which is very good, I think. Anyway, your policy is to get world class sounding gear at an affordable price point. So of course a Neumann capsule is out of the equation.

Did you ever put the Heiserman cap in your mic?

ah, Heiserman is a wild card for me. All these other men are well known and regarded, I'm still trying to shop for future microphones.
I want to attempt an analogy. The capsule is the engine and the mic circuit and supporting circuitry is the car. You can have a great engine but you still need to worry about tyres, brakes, steering and all of that.
Anyway I love the wild west of DIY mics. It's where I like to be.

I have an HK47 that I put into a mic-parts 990 upgrade -- a circuit that hides NOTHING. I agree with the previous poster that the capsule is on the bright side. I also agree that it is still a great capsule with wonderful clarity.
I have a UM17 that I put a BN K7 in a couple of years ago. I think I'm going to swap the K7 and the HK47 -- I'd like to hear the K7 in the 990 mod, and the HK47 in the smokier tube mic. Probably a better match of capsules to circuits.

Hey all!! Thanks to everyone that has been saying such nice things things about my capsules!! The topic around my hk47 I really hate even calling it a 47 to be honest. I like to think of it being a modern sounding 47ish capsule. One that works well in a flat circuit. The brightness of that particular capsule is something I kept due to some positive feedback but that being said darkening to match closer to a true k47 isn't out of the question and if someone makes that request I would be happy to fulfill it! It almost makes me want to start offering both. Regarding my 87 the adjustments I made for stam are now a part of the normal capsule. Eric

Eric Hi Eric, does that mean we can consider the HK87 as a variant of the Neumann one, and not as a clone, as we should about your HK47 ? Thanks !
