HI all,
I have 4 VP26 with gar 2520 DOAs I absolutely love them on drums, gtrs and some vocals.
I am now in a lucky situation where I can buy more CAPI pres and would like the advice from someone that has tried both the VP26 and the VP28.
I read so much good stuff about the VP28 (and know about the extra trafo + filters) that I want at least two of these. The "problem" is: should I go for 2 more VP26 and 2 VP28 or just get 4 VP28?
I would go for red dots on the VP28s
I would basically need something more versatile than the VP26 (which, again, I LOVE) to handle a broader range of vocals applications, drum overheads and more acoustic sources. If the VP28 can do this and on top of that can still be driven with the output atttenuator, then I could happily just get 4 VP28s. I hear people use VP28s for snare and kick (I love my VP26 for this) with great results, did anyone happen to try both VP26 and VP28 on these sources?
thanks a lot
nicco

For me the feature set of the VP28 makes it the clear (and superb) choice...

Yes. If between a vp26 and VP28 I'll use the 28 100% of time. It's the same circuit so the differences would be less than say a 28 vs 312.
I really enjoy the filters on the 28....currently I'm rocking 5 vp28s and 2 vp312di working my way towards an all vp28 front end...

VP28s for me (with the Litz) too. I continue to go to them for most things.

I like the 26'a and 28's both. Sometimes thicker is NOT better, and a bit more transparent - WITH some vibe - is desired. That's when the 26's get chosen over the 28's. <<thumbsup>> Generally I end up on the 28's although both are great, and the differences become less when surrounded by other great gear (Comps / EQ's / 2 Buss processing / Etc..).

For me it's a little bit like guitar amps...Remember the early Marshalls with only one volume knob? If you wanted "that" sound you needed to play at ear splitting volume...
With the introduction of a gain and master volume control our tonal options increased geometrically...
It's one of the many reasons I love the VP28...
But like with amps, if the situation calls for a Fender I'd use a Fender...
Mic Pre wise if the situation calls for something less thick than a VP28 I'll reach for a non-CAPI pre...fortunately those situations, for me anyway, are extremely rare 😀

I own both and would agree wilth all of the above comments.
I'd add that if price/budget is an issue go for the vp26's and don't worry about it. They both sound great and very similar. I love my vp28's but if all I had were 26's I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.
