Today....
CM: Are you sure we can use this Behringer compressor on the guitar to get a longer sustain.
ME: Yes, I use it for this since 20 years and it is great at it.
CM: But its Behringer... are you sure.
ME: Wait and hear...
Meanwhile the guitar solo is played. And we listen to it...
CM: It sounds nearly invisible and the sustain sounds very natural. Where can I get one of this!!
ME: At ebay for around 30-40 bucks.
CM: Blank Stare.
Are people buying gear by the BRAND NAMEs...or by internet reviews? Or do they listen first?
Because GS said it is bad it must be bad? On GS also Nuemann Mics have been unusable.
Sometimes the world around me is hard to believe.

I've got one old Behringer that I like an MDX 2100 Composer. It's through-hole so I was able to put some better parts in key places. It's a really fun compressor that I especially like on mix bus for electronic music.
The Neumann bashing I truly do not understand. Those mics are great.

I pretty much gave up on the internet as far as gear reviews is concerned . According to the internet everything I use is complete crap and unusable. I don't form an opinion until I hear it for myself through my speakers .

The one thing I do go by is interviews by famous engineer producers . Like Flood for example says he uses a beta58 90% of the time when recording vocals . I picked one up and track with the monitors on and l'm loving it . But on GS a beta58 is crap and can't be used on a pro recording .

A guy I used to know called "Phunky Phred" turned me on to the Beta 58. Really great vocal sound.

I don't form an opinion until I hear it for myself through my speakers . So true I read an article about that MDs go crazy because people say "I read in the internet that it could be.... " if you can heal yourself with the internet why a consultation? The costumer came because a producer told him that I can play a few lines for him, and he is not trusting me... Sometimes I get the feeling that the internet is not always a change for the better. Anyway I use the Behringer MDX 1000 for ballad guitar solo lines to get that ultra long sustain. This shit thing rocks for that because its more invisible than all my other compressors... Every time I do the trick I ask myself why some people hate VCA compression. Another task the MDX 1000 is good for, a very nice round kick drum. You just put it in with corners and it comes out shaped off and fits the mix.

I trust interviews even less, all to often there is behind the scenes politics behind what is plugged in articles and interviews. I can't go into specifics but I know of way to many instances where what you read was used or is a favorite is the result of endorsement or politics. Trust your own ears and those of the people you know! I put much more weight in what the regulars around here say than I do what I read and I am the first to admit any possible conflict or relationship passed or present! The problem with the Behringer wasn't that it sucked ( other than as a stereo comp because it only responded to the left ch ) it was there Buisness practices! The thing is there is very little gear made today at truelly sucks ! If you can't make a decent recording with 99% of the gear out there find a new vocation!

One of the reasons I buy new gear is I can send it back. I've gone through round one of gear that got internet acclaim that didn't work for me. Now, if I don't like it I send it back.

LOL you are so right I could tell a story from my time when I did endorsmend for Walden guitars.... I just say, as soon someone gives you something for free ... you are biased to say something good about the brand, even if you are not totally into it... Everytime I see those UAD interviews I bet my left leg that they brought nice gifts just a few minutes before the video tracking starts. I mean nothing is wrong with it, but people should not be naive to believe all the nice words they hear...

Magazine & internet reviews are edited by the advertising department and 100% for sure gear is mentioned in interviews to fulfill contractual obligations. I've worked on sessions where gear was swapped out for photo shoots, I've been parts of reviews that never made print because the product didn't work but they were an advertiser. Add in that Internet sound samples are of dubious quality (either by lack of skill or compression schemes). Basically you should only trust your ears in your studio on your stuff which sucks but is really the only way. Then if you like something call the manufacturer, try to get an endorsement and tell your friends and internet followers Or at the very very least the words " I used xx because xx pays me to use xx " or " they gave me one so what the hell I put it up", because that would be way too honest!

I agree but how many purchases have you made that were because of a review?
Also I used plenty of Behringer stuff live but the main problem has always been longevity; their shit don't last very long. But for $40 you can always get another. I was working with a client that recorded a lot of stuff at home. I had thought we would have to retake a few of the vocals as for half the album he used an mxl mic and borrowed a Neumann tlm103 for other vox but when i listened to it what i thought was the tlm103 was the mxl and vice versa.
