Here's a question for all of you that own SSL-style bus compressors (Stam Audio, etc.) I'm the proud owner of a TK Audio BC1-S and I really love it!
I've noticed that when I hit bypass, the gain reduction is still in effect until the needle in the VU reaches zero. This is easy to see if you are really crushing the signal, because it takes a long time to go from 10 dB of gain reduction to zero. Not that I do that often, mind you!
Does this happen to your compressors, or is it specific to the TK Audio model?

Unless the unit has a true bypass feature, most of them just turn off the sidechain detection to stop compression and create a "bypass".
The SSL console always had audio going through the VCAs, so it's not necessarily incorrect to bypass by turning off the sidechain.
