It's an Audioarts compressor it what it is!
I do remember those from, IIRC, the late '70s - early '80s, buit I don't really remember much about them, other than that I believe that they were one of the first "affordable" comp-limiters to hot that market in the first wave of home studios. I think..... Might be a bit newer, not sure. It appears that Audioarts has been active in the radio realm for quite a awhile - this may have originally have been targeted at small radio stations or it might be a crossover product for a radio oriented company trying to get into the recording market.
What does it sound like?

More closet cleaning... Probably should start a thread for resurrected gear. What do you have in your closet? Attachments:

He used to bring by prototypes to the electronics shop I was working at. Blew the hell out of one of his early talk boxes testing it.

What does it sound like? Picked it up on a trade a few years ago. It does gain reduction for sure... IS IT COOL? I dunno... honestly haven't used it besides making sure it was functional. What do you have in your gear closet John?

One more before nap time... We used to use those for preramp/EQs in early modular bass guitar rigs. Not too bad for what it was at the time - horrible ICs. OK, stuff in my closet/storage..... Can't post any pics unfortunately - some of the stuff is in my storage locker 60 miles away. Yamaha PM 1000 16 channel console, modified to a 6 out monitor board by a legendary Bay Area audio engineer whose name escapes me at the moment that was from the legendary "The Stone" nightclub in SF. Lots of history on that board - The Ramones, Dion DiMucci, Jery Lee Lewis, Albert King, any band that was doing a mid-level club gig and not working with Bill Graham. I remember mixing monitors for the Chile Peppers when Hillel was still alive. Did a lot of other shows on that board, can't remember them all. Several kids on GS who think the PM-1000 is a "poor man's Neve" have tried to buy channel strips frrom me but I won't sell because I think the PM-1000 is a real POS and it's best left as an historical artifact. Another piece of history is an old FM Productions monitor board. It has 22 API gold faders and custom electronics by Chaos Audio in a skinny Stevenson Interface chassis. It's 20 in/3 out and the discrete op-amp line amps are hot enough to push a floor wedge loud enough to use as a cue monitor on moderate level gigs. It was originally built for an early CSN tour, then did The Stones in, I believe, '72. I used it as the monitor board at The Mabuhay Gardens punk and metal club in the early to mid '80s. Hey, 3 monitor mixes onstage is definitely better than one at FOH! Sadly, the power supply has been lost some time in the last couple or three decades and I no longer have the schematics.

Audio Arts /Wheatstone made their name in Broadcast and some use in big name touring and live sound install. The rack gear was a step up from Ashly, Rane and Furman of the day but not Quite KT or BSS. The comp is a VCA based comp that some say is the poor mans SSL, didn't use much of the comp, but I had 4 or 5 of the parimetric EQ's and a pair of the Graphics , the Pareametrics were nice a tad dark but noisy, the Graphics were OK and started my love affair with White For the sonics and TDM for the 3 notch filters that could get you out of trouble on wedges. At one time Modding those Comps was fashion trend, I know JW has done is thing on AA gear in the past and like I said it was noisy so JW would be the man to cover that Achilles heal!
