Just ordered a pair of these for 8 channels of D.A.V. pres. I've done a bunch of listening tests and these guys keep coming out on top for me. Anyone else use them? I'm looking forward to getting them in my studio. FYI the exchange rate is fantastic right now. With shipping 8 channels came in for me under $1700.00!

Nice clean pre, always wondered what one modded by JW, the king of Clean would sound like.

I'm curious about this one... Is it in the same league as a Focusrite ISA828? I recently needed an 8 channel preamp for drum tracking and went with an old Aphex 1788A since it has Jensen transformers, was originally in the 5k price range and has clever built-in limiters. So far the Aphex sounds very classy especially at this 1k price. I was also looking at the JLMTMP8 in this price range.

I'm selling my isa428 to fund this thing so hopefully I'll like it better! I was just reading a thread today where Jim Williams and another guy get into it over modding these things. I think I'm over the modding thing. I'm buying it because I like what I've heard, and I don't want to mess with it. Not sure what the shipping time from England to Nj is, but I'll definitely report back with how I feel!

When you get it can you do me a favor and tell me what the power specs are on the back like how many watts or amps it is rated for?

There are 3 versions of those out there. Older units used the SSM2017 mic pre chip. Later versions went with either the BurrBrown INA217 or that corp 1510, all similar and pin compatable. Output opamps are AD OP275's. Yes, it's a $4 chip mic preamp design, like you might find in other products like AMEK consoles.
Tests here determined that the Analog Devices SSM2019 is the best of the chip preamps. Those are a pin compatible improvement. DAV runs on + - 20 volts, I reduce that to increase long term reliability as you still get + 27 dbu on the outputs.
I also make a special flat pack version of the PIP module which offers the best sound/performance out of those designs. -132 db EIN at 50 ohms, 1.5 ppm IMD and a 60 V/us slew rate easily beats the chip preamps.

I went through all these chips, when I was designing and building my own preamp a few years back, after shoulder surgery and couldnt play for nearly a year. I did extensive reamp tests on all of them, (like I said I had time). At the time Jim had is PIP version 1 out... I ended up liking that the best. The others i tried, SSM2017 THAT 1510 INA217 are all cool... its a very simple circuit easy to build, and I ended up buying PCBs off eBay that I modded really simply... was a good exercise cheers Wiz

These finally arrived last night, so I spent the day messing around and recording a few different sources and microphones. They are really freaking great! I got to compare them to my Heritage 1073 and obviously they are very different. The DAV is really balanced and clean, but there is a nice warmth that makes everything sound pleasant on playback. I loved it on acoustic guitar much more than the Heritage. The high end is really natural and smooth. Vocals sound like I'm standing in the room, as did my cornet. My Violet Design Garnet really feels good through these pres as well. I dunno....I feel like I could go on and on. I can't wait to record a drum kit with these. So far I love them and they were really affordable too!

When you get it can you do me a favor and tell me what the power specs are on the back like how many watts or amps it is rated for? Not too much info on the back...just that it takes a 250 mA fuse. I had to open it up yesterday because the power supply was set for European voltage. All I had to do was rotate a white plug with some pins in it to get it to US specs. Everything inside looked clean and high quality. These are a fantastic deal.
