Hey Guys, what's the current software version for the artist mix? I'm waiting on Avid to deal with a serial number transfer and have a disk with drivers, but don't want to be installing old drivers if there is a newer, better version.
Also, any tips and tricks with this thing?

I'm on EuControl - 3.2.2.9608336 - I do seem to remember flashing the ram in the hardware unit at some point. Can't remember exactly when. Most likely when I installed it. I'm sure I'm out of date at this point, but things work so Im not messing with it. Yosemite, PT12 It's pretty brainless. Other than when I installed everything, I've never even looked at the manual. The Mix is pretty straightforward. Sometimes EC doesn't see the Mix. I suspect it's a Yosemite thing. Seems to be happening more and more these days. Usually going to EUControl settings or restarting all EUCON applications will get things going. Also, you have to set up PT perhiperals set properly. Good luck. Send clips when you get it going.

Do you have the control too or just the mix? Do you prefer one over the other? I guess it's moot at this point since I purchased the mix, but curious if I'm missing out by not having the control.

I ju7st have the mix. I'm not looking for a full featured centerpiece mixing extravaganza. I find that when I've mixed on those, I only use a small percentage of what they offer. I just need a simple group of 8 faders, and Mix does it elegantly and inexpensively.

Hi jcoutu1 I have a mix at my studio, and work regularly at a studio with both the mix and the control and at a studio with just the control. From my experience, they complement each other greatly. Faderwise, the mix kills the control. You have it all right there. It is indeed a lot more intuitive than at the control, where faders, screen and knobs feel disconnected. However, there's a whole other layer of control where the artist control slays the mix. Transport is a bitch at the mix. And there are no user programmable soft keys. The artist control lets you access pretty much everything and the way you want if you care enough to set it up... To sum it up, with the mix I can work in a way that I don't need to be looking at the screen, but I feel I depend more on the keyboard. With the control my workflow is faster but I don't seem to work that much with the faders. I used to have 2 motormix before getting the artist mix. The avid ones feel way cheaper and somehow less thought out. But it is a lot more sensitive and flashy. At this price point compromises have to be made I guess. Anyhow, I hope this was helpful and I'm sure you'll enjoy the artist mix! Cheers!

DrBill and bluenoise, do you guys bother to use the knobs for controlling plugin parameters? that feature always seemed so gimmicky to me.

Not really.

So just leveling, fader rides, and panning?

I do, actually. I probably rely more on plugins than the doc But only on the mix. On the control I feel that you really need to watch and think anytime you want to use those damned rotary encoders. Maybe it's just me, but they don't feel intuitive. On the other hand, on the mix, the buttons at the left let you quickly access a lot of features for those knobs. Cue mixes, aux sends, pan, and even plug-in control are what I use them the most for. It can be gimmicky in the sense that they don't feel like grabbing an actual pot on a hardware unit. And they feel cheap and fragile. IDK, It just serves a porpoise. Anything that keeps my hand off the mouse is welcome...

So just leveling, fader rides, and panning? For me, yes. I also use a big billiard ball sized trackball - and I'm extremely comfortable with that. I go back and forth and probably do 50% of my automation with either. Depends where my hand happens to be and the type/style of ride.

Let's see, the mix sits on a music stand unplugged, and the control sits on top of a bookcase in the back of the room collecting dust lol
It's a shame too, cuz they aren't cheap. I mean, I bought Euphonix boards and paid about 400 for each, but my desk just doesn't have room for them. And a new desk ain't in the budget for a couple years. Wife wants to move to L.A. and I want to ride dirt bikes

and I want to ride dirt bikes OK, now we're talking!!! Forget the controllers - thread derail! Been riding in So Cal since I was a teenager. The opportunities in So Cal are quickly going away as the uber liberal tree huggers gain control of the political structure there, but it's still better than a lot of the rest of the country, and the weather is pretty awesome - but offset by the incredible amount of people there. To really get out and ride the good stuff, you need to become an outlaw. If your wife is serious, you should spend some time there before moving. It's an eye opener. The city is in a constant state of what seems like exponential change. Changes every time I go there (about every 6 months or sometimes more.) Housing for a "normal" home is getting very close to $1M (a tiny dump in a crappy area is now in the $500-650k range) and the traffic is off the hook. To add to that it's soooo spread out - like commuting state to state almost. I couldn't stay there anymore - memories of how it USED to be clouded any benefit of how it is now, and people are just damn cranky there. I can drive back from NorAZ and get most places on the east side in just an hour or two more than it would take to commute from OC to the Northern SF valley. Wild. Best musicians in the world, although so many of them are leaving as well. Traveling back into town from out of state, or out of LA for their gigs they don't want to leave behind. These days, for riding, I love UT and AZ for opportunities to ride long distances. Moab is awesome. The UT mountains are killer. AZ desert is awesome, but only in the winter. NorAz is an awesome compromise and rideable most of the year mountains, red rock, desert-isn areas - and it's only not rideable for a couple of months in the winter, but then, it's down to the desert. Most western states are great but here in the northern AZ mountains, it's SOOOO freaking rocky. Like going out to get beat up every time you ride - very technical. My Husky's are the only thing saving me here. Ty Davis motors and suspension setups with Scotts steering dampers, rekluse and tubeliss tires that I can run very low pressures in. Ride straight out of the garage for as long as I can find gas. So different than LA where I had to trailer 2 hours to get anywhere. If tracks are your thing, So Cal is the best, but depending on where you locate, you can have some long drives to get to them - 1.5 to 3 hours each way. What you riding?

Ditto everything Bill said. Used to be the best place in the world for riding. Last time I went to Glamis I got fined for no light. Even though I was almost back to camp and it wasn't fully dark yet. Last time I went to the desert I got fined for no spark arrester. Wasn't aware that dirt and cactus were flammable. It was getting really overcrowded and dangerous too. Eventually I just stopped going.
People have lost their minds here. It's like the crash never happened. I bought my house in a bumb infested neighborhood for 150k I just sold it for 815k and there are more bumbs than ever. They actually started pitching tents on the sidewalks and the lapd aren't allowed to do anything bc of the crazy laws here. The next neighborhood over is crazy ghetto I don't even drive through it and the houses are getting into the 4's. Compton is in the 3's. I seriously can't even comprehend it it is so insane. The neighborhood I grew up in is having trouble filling their schools bc no young couples can afford to live there anymore and the ones that can send their kids private. And these are the same little 2000 soft middle class homes selling in the millions. It has to crash again. There's just no way these houses are worth what they're paying for them.
