In Tape Op's VP26 review they compare the 212 to the VP26 .
I never see anyone talk about the 212 . What time period was the 212 used in api consoles ? Looks like api still makes the 212 , is it their vintage api mic pre version ?

Think of the 212 as the 2 rack unit high thinner faced 312 wear the output Transformer is optional. 212 and the rest of the 200 series were designed to take up less real estate in the Paul Wolf era consoles such as the legacy. The 200 series also uses more of the 2520's the smaller footprint versions of the 2510. Sonics, think modern 512. So if somebody is talking about the pre in a modern API console its the 212 or a derivative.

Wonder why the tape op reviewer thought the 212 and VP26 sounded identical on louder sources and the VP26 more transparent on softer sources . I would think they wouldn't sound the same at all and the 212 would be more transparent on softer sources because the VP26 is pretty damn colored .

Good question, and in part why I don't give much weight to reviews! I have found it is always better to talk to somebody who has used something rather than a review! Also having had things in print it always amazes me how things get lost in editing and how hard you have to fight an editor sometimes to keep a qualifier or adjative that communicates what you want!
